Ally Cong. seeks ‘better coordination over crucial public issues’ with ruling NC

Posted on May 7, 2026 By admin

Congress, which fought the 2024 Assembly elections in alliance with National Conference (NC) in J&K, on Thursday (May 7, 2026) asserted for “better coordination over crucial public issues” in the Union Territory (UT).

“Mutual understanding and cooperation among coalition partners were non-negotiable for smooth governance and effective public welfare. The NC cannot afford to ignore the voice of its alliance partner,” said senior Congress leader and legislator Ghulam Ahmad Mir.

The statement came days after NC president Dr. Farooq Abdullah accused the Congress of not doing enough to restore Statehood. Earlier, the J&K Congress had decided not to join the Cabinet of the Omar Abdullah government “till Statehood is restored”.

Mr. Mir, however, said concerns and aspirations of the party “must be respected wholeheartedly for the coalition to remain relevant and functional”.

In the 90-member Assembly, the NC won 42 seats and Congress six in the 2024 Assembly elections.

Last year, the alliance partners witnessed came across aggrieved over the Rajya Sabha elections. J&K Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra had then admitted “growing unhappiness over governance, public and administrative issues,” between the allies.
