Opposition parties, including the Congress and the Trinamool Congress, on Friday (February 13, 2026) congratulated the BNP for winning the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by its chairman Tarique Rahman has got an absolute majority in the parliamentary election of February 12, the latest official update issued by the Election Commission of Bangaldesh has announced. As per the latest report, the BNP-led alliance has secured 212 seats, a two-thirds majority, in the Parliament and the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami has won 77 seats.

The election was held to elect a new government to replace the interim administration, which took charge after the fall of the Awami League regime in August 2024.

In a post on X, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said: “On behalf of the Indian National Congress, I congratulate Mr. Tarique Rahman and the BNP for winning the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.” India and Bangladesh share deep-rooted bonds of history, language, culture, and multitude of other commonalities, the party chief said.

“A democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh would always be supported by all Indians for the stability and peace of our region,” Mr. Kharge said.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool chairperson Mamata Banerjee extended greetings to Mr. Rahman on leading the party to victory in the parliamentary elections.

My hearty congratulations, shubhonandan, to all my brothers and sisters, all the people, in Bangladesh. My advance Ramazan mubarak to all of them.

In a post on X, she said, “My hearty congratulations, shubhonandan, to all my brothers and sisters, all the people, in Bangladesh. My advance Ramazan mubarak to all of them. For this great victory, my congratulations to my Tarique-Bhai, his party, and all the parties. Pray, you all be well and happy.”

Ms. Banerjee expressed hope that ties between India and Bangladesh remain cordial. “Wish that our relations with Bangladesh be always cordial,” she said.

The election was seen as a direct contest between the BNP and its former ally Jamaat-e-Islami, in the absence of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina’s now debarred Awami League. The BNP was in power last time between 2001 and 2006 when Jamaat was its crucial partner, with two of its leaders serving as ministers.
