GAIL India’s net profit falls 17% YoY amid rise in expenses

State-owned gas distributor GAIL (India) Ltd.’s standalone net profits in the second quarter plunged by 17% on a year-over-year basis to ₹2,217.24 crore decelerated by growing expenses. Cumulative expenses of the distributor rose 9.3% YoY to ₹33,000.62 crore during the quarter primarily driven by increase in material costs at 8.6% YoY.

The company’s revenues however rose about 6.5% during the period to ₹35,823.81 crore.

The natural gas marketing segment of the distributor, which accounts for the majority of their income and deals with transmission and distribution of natural gas, recorded a 9.31% YoY uptick in revenues to ₹31,422.71 crore in the September-end quarter. Although, the segment’s profit slipped 1.86% to ₹1,304.12 crore compared to the corresponding period last year.

In the first half of the ongoing financial year, GAIL (India) supplied 105.47 million metric standard cubic meters per day (MMSCMD) of natural gas. A major chunk of this went to the fertiliser industry (33%), followed by for city-gas distribution (27%), overseas sales (13%) and power (10%), among others.

Specifically in the second quarter, GAIL’s total natural gas transmission volume, or the volume of gas transmitted through pipelines and other means, stood at 123.59 MMSCMD. Whilst the marketing volume stood at 105.49 MMSCMD.

Scrips of the natural gas distributor closed 0.16% lower at ₹182.80 apiece on the BSE, and 0.49% lower at ₹82.20 apiece on the NSE.
