Women’s World Cup | ‘Feel bad for Pratika… but I’m also trusting myself,’ says Shafali ahead of semifinal

Almost exactly a year after her last ODI outing in India blues, Shafali Verma finds herself back in the national set-up — this time with a shot at redemption on the grandest stage. The 21-year-old was drafted into the squad as Pratika Rawal’s injury replacement ahead of India’s Women’s ODI World Cup semifinal against defending champion Australia at the DY Patil Stadium on Thursday.

Having joined the team after being informed of her selection while with the Haryana squad for the Senior Women’s T20 tournament in Surat, Shafali admitted that the circumstances were bittersweet.

“What happened with Pratika was unfortunate. No player wants to see a teammate injured,” she said, adding that she sees this as a chance “sent by God to do something good.”

Back in the mix after a strong domestic run, Shafali said she feels confident and ready if given an opportunity. Having featured in several high-pressure games before, she believes experience will help her handle the semifinal stage calmly.

“It’s all about keeping my mind clear and trusting myself. I’ve been in such situations earlier, so I’ll just stay calm and back my game.”

Adapting from T20s to the 50-over format, Shafali said she has worked hard in the nets over the last two days to fine-tune her rhythm. She credited the team management and senior players for making her feel welcome and backing her natural attacking game. “There’s no pressure. I’ve been told to play freely — respect the good balls and attack the ones in my range,” she said.
