Which country is closest to space?

Space officially begins about 100 km above the Earth’s surface, a boundary known as the Kármán line. But Earth isn’t a perfect sphere — it’s slightly flattened at the poles and bulged at the equator. Because of this shape, the distance from the centre of the Earth to the surface isn’t the same everywhere. So, being closest to space doesn’t just depend on a mountain’s height — it also depends on where it’s located on the planet.

If we went by the simple logic that the tallest mountain must be closest to the sky, the answer would be Mount Everest. But surprisingly, it’s not!

Because of Earth’s shape, points near the equator are actually farther from the center of the Earth, making them closer to outer space. That’s why a mountain near the equator can be closer to space than even the tallest peak in the world!

The closest place revealed

So, which country is closest to space?

It’s Ecuador, home to Mount Chimborazo, a dormant volcano near the equator.

Even though Mount Everest is taller above sea level, the peak of Chimborazo is actually farther from the center of the Earth. Because Earth bulges at the equator, this makes Chimborazo the closest point on Earth to outer space.

Fun facts

Astronauts at the International Space Station orbit Earth about 400 km above — that’s just four times higher than where space officially begins

Planes fly at around 10–12 km — far below the Kármán line.

Did you know?

If you stood on Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador, you’d be 2,000 metres closer to space than if you were standing on Mount Everest!
