Ola Electric has on Thursday (October 16, 2025) announced its foray into Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) market, a segment that is expected to cross ₹3 lakh crore in value by 2030 from ₹1 lakh crore currently.

The Bengaluru-based electric vehicle manufacturer has launched Ola Shakti, its portable Battery Energy Storage System solution for homes, farms, and also businesses.

Addressing a media conference, Ola Electric CMD Bhavish Aggarwal said, “India doesn’t face energy shortage, what it faces is energy storage issue. There is huge gap between energy production and demand, solar can only fill half of the story, while battery (storage) will complete it.’‘

He said, energy consumption peaks in the night when sunlight is not there, especially in case of solar energy. By introducing Ola Shakti, Ola was trying to turn this gap into an opportunity to attain energy independence, he added.

According to Mr. Bhavish, the company expects its annual Gigafactory consumption for the BESS market to scale up to 5GWh and exceed its automotive consumption in the next couple of years.

“We have built world-class battery and cell technology for electric mobility. Ola Shakti extends that innovation to homes, helping them store and use clean energy intelligently,” he added.

He further said, Ola Shakti was a logical next step for Ola Electric as it leveraged its existing cell technology, Gigafactory production capabilities, and nationwide Ola network as a ready sales and distribution backbone, at zero incremental capex or no additional investment in R&D.

Powered by Ola’s indigenous 4680 Bharat Cells, Ola Shakti was the country’s first residential BESS which was fully designed, engineered, and manufactured domestically, claimed the EV firm. Launched in configurations:1.5 kWh, 3 kWh, 5.2 kWh, and 9.1 kWh, Ola Shakti BESS are available at introductory (for the first 10,000 units) price of ₹29,999, ₹55,999, ₹1,19,999 and ₹1,59,999, respectively, as per the company. Reservations started on Thursday at ₹999, with deliveries beginning during Makar Sankranti 2026.

₹1,59,999. The system can power air conditioners, refrigerators, induction cookers, farm pumps, and communication equipment, with charging times as fast as 2 hours and backup capacity of up to 1.5 hours on full load, the firm claimed.

Responding to a query on safety, the product team at Ola said, the new product delivered automotive-grade safety, industry-leading efficiency of up to 98%, and zero running and maintenance costs, unlike conventional lead-acid inverters or diesel generators.
