For Varun Goud, it is team first always

As the world bid farewell to another calendar year (2024), the 24-year-old Varun Goud marked the beginning of his cricketing breakthrough, announcing his arrival on the national stage.

Representing Hyderabad in the Vijay Hazare Trophy against a formidable Karnataka side, Varun walked in under pressure — his team struggling at 99 for four in the 21st over, chasing a daunting target of 321.

What followed was nothing short of extraordinary. The all-rounder unleashed a breathtaking counterattack, hammering an unbeaten 109 off just 82 balls to seal a stunning victory for Hyderabad.

Fast forward to the Buchi Babu tournament 2025. On a challenging surface, Varun once again delivered: a gritty 41 in the first innings, followed by a match-defining 91 in the second, and two crucial wickets that helped Hyderabad beat Haryana to reach the final for the second straight year.

In an exclusive chat with The Hindu, Varun reflected on his journey, his personal coach R. Sridhar, and his aspirations for the future.

“Scoring a century on New Year’s Eve was the start I needed. It was memorable,” said Varun. “But this knock in the Buchi Babu is my favourite. The pitch was challenging, and when I walked in, we had lost three quick wickets. Building a partnership from that position was very satisfying”.

“Most of the time, my role is to steady the innings. Even a small contribution that helps the team win gives me the ultimate satisfaction,” he added.

Speaking about his mentor, Varun said, “Sridhar sir is my go-to person. He understands my game and is very empathetic. Every conversation with him is productive. Whether before the tournament or after, I always speak with him. He reminds me to stay in the present and adapt.”

Varun also expressed keen interest in playing in the IPL. “Honestly, I believe I can contribute. I would be grateful for any opportunity that comes my way”.
