Amazon India has reported a 170% year-on-year growth in one-day deliveries in Kolkata. With Durga Puja and Diwali approaching, the e-commerce major said it is witnessing a sharp rise in premium and luxury product sales across West Bengal, particularly in Kolkata.

Ahead of its Great Indian Festival Sale, the Director of Amazon Transportation Services, Arindam Ganguly, said the company had opened a new Fulfilment Centre in Hooghly, taking the total to four in the State. The move, he said, was aimed at improving the delivery network and ensuring faster services.

“We are delivering joy, powered by our continuous investments in infrastructure, technology, and the dedicated efforts of our 1.5 lakh seasonal associates nationwide, including thousands right here in West Bengal,” Mr. Ganguly said on Thursday. He added that Amazon was strengthening its operations in the State to meet rising demand in the long festive season, the impact of which was already visible across sectors.

Amazon officials said the most popular products in Kolkata include smartphones, consumer electronics, home and kitchen items, groceries, and everyday essentials. However, ahead of the festive and wedding season, demand has spiked for premium categories such as silk saris, heritage jewellery, and international luxury beauty products.

As Amazon expanded into selling two-wheelers, it recorded a 60% year-on-year growth in this category in West Bengal, with MotoCorp and Vida leading sales. Other products showing strong growth included smart appliances (30%) and kitchen, dining, and furniture (20% each).

Responding to a query from The Hindu on the recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) revamp, Mr. Ganguly said, “There will be a simplification of the understanding of taxation. This is going to make the sellers’ lives much easier. We welcome this change.”
