Political scientist and academician Professor Muzaffar Assadi is no more

MYSURU

Well known political scientist and academician Prof Muzaffar Assadi passed away at a private hospital in Bengaluru on January 3.

Prof Assadi, 63, who served as the Acting Vice Chancellor and Dean of Faculty of Arts at University of Mysore, leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter.

Prof Assadi’s body will be brought to Mysuru and kept for public viewing at Muslim hostel in Saraswathipuram in the evening on January 4.

Known for his research work on various social issues including lives of tribals, Prof Assadi had served as special officer of the Raichur University. He was also a columnist in various newspapers.

Born in Shirva in Udupi district, Prof Assadi finished his graduation and post graduation from the University of Mangalore before completing his PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He was a Rockefeller post doctoral fellow at the University of Chicago.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has expressed shock over the ‘unexpected death’ of Prof Assadi.

Describing Prof Assadi as a “senior scholar and social thinker, who was loved by all of us”, Mr Siddaramaiah, in a message on X (earlier Twitter) said Prof Assadi’s struggle for the society’s welfare was guided by rational thoughts.

His death will create a vaccuum in the society, he said. Prof Assadi’s popular not only in Karnataka, but across the country and abroad through his scholarly writings and lectures shaped by his continous research, said Mr Siddaramaiah.

He said Prof Assadi was also his well-wisher in politics and his death was a great loss for him personally.
