The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has decided to take the flyover route to decongest Kanakapura Road, which been witnessing gridlock almost every day. The project will cost about ₹100 core per kilometre of construction, with the total estimated cost pegged at ₹1,200 crore.

The project is part of the 17 flyovers proposed by the civic body to decongest the city and is championed by Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who represents the Kanakapura constituency in the Assembly.  The civic body will soon commission a detailed project report (DPR).

As building a flyover on the arterial road is now tough because of the metro corridor, developing an alternative road to Kanakapura Road has been a pending demand. The BBMP now plans to build the flyover on BWSSB Cauvery Pipeline Road, parallel to the arterial road linking Banashankari and Kanakapura Road beyond the NICE Road junction.

The pipeline road is uneven in width, and on either side there is the Cauvery water pipeline and land, mostly belonging to government agencies including Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB).

“Building the flyover over the water pipeline without affecting it will solve the land acquisition issues,” said the official.

“As Kanakapura Road is a fast developing corridor, traffic density has shot up significantly and travel times have increased. The BWSSB Cauvery Pipeline Road, which is uneven in width, can be developed as a parallel road to Kanakapura Road. We have petitioned for the same. Though flyovers generally do not make sense, a flyover on that road may alleviate the situation in the region, provided the civic body provides multiple entry and exits to the flyover,” said Abdul Aleem of Changemakers of Kanakapura Road.
