A 24-year-old man was killed after a speeding car crashed into an air-release valve of the Krishna drinking water pipeline near Nagole Metro Station in the early hours of Tuesday (October 20, 2026), sending a massive jet of water more than 20 feet into the air and disrupting drinking water supply to several parts of Hyderabad.

The deceased was identified as Vineeth, a resident of Hayathnagar.

The accident occurred around 4 a.m. near Metro Pillar Nos. 813 and 814 on the Uppal-Nagole route. The car reportedly rammed into the iron fencing protecting the air-release valve of the Krishna Drinking Water Supply Scheme Phase-2 pipeline, damaging both the protective structure and the valve.

The impact caused water to erupt with considerable force, reportedly rising above the elevated metro track. Thousands of litres of drinking water gushed out of the damaged pipeline, inundating surrounding roads and causing severe traffic congestion along the Uppal-Nagole stretch. Videos shot by commuters flooded social media platforms, demanding faster fixes in times of water scarcity across the city due to El Nino.

According to the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), the damaged valve was located approximately 20 feet from the main road near Uppal Bagayath.

Emergency repairs completed in five hours

In a statement shared on X, HMWSSB said its transmission officials responded immediately after the accident and stopped the relevant pumps to control the water flow.

పండుగ వేళ ప్రజలకు ఇబ్బందులు కలగకుండా చర్యలు:

Following instructions from Water Board Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy, officials from the Transmission, Operations and Maintenance departments launched emergency repairs to restore the damaged infrastructure.

Technical teams mobilised the necessary machinery, equipment and personnel, carrying out repairs continuously to minimise disruption to the city’s drinking water supply.

The Water Board said the damaged air valve system was repaired within five hours, completely stopping the leakage. The pipeline was subsequently brought back into operation, restoring drinking water supply to the affected areas.

Police and fire services personnel also rushed to the accident site following the incident.

Water supply affected across several localities

The damage had disrupted drinking water supply to several parts of Hyderabad, including BN Reddy Nagar, Uppal, Vanasthalipuram, Ramanthapur, Beerappagadda, Autonagar, Prakash Nagar, Begumpet, Padmaraonagar, Secunderabad, Cantonment, Lalaguda, Addagutta, Nallagutta, Mettuguda, Vaishalinagar, Meerpet, Badangpet, Balapur and Marredpally.

Earlier, the Water Board had announced that tankers would be deployed wherever necessary and appealed to residents to use water sparingly until normal supply was restored.

HMWSSB said special priority was given to completing the repairs quickly to avoid prolonged inconvenience to residents during the festival period.

Water Board MD K. Ashok Reddy congratulated the engineers, technical personnel and staff of the Transmission, Operations and Maintenance departments for their coordinated response and completion of repairs within five hours.

He also directed officials to maintain similar levels of preparedness and coordination during emergencies to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply across the city.
