India has crossed 300 GW of installed non-fossil fuel power capacity and is well on track to achieve its target of 500 GW by 2030, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday (August 27, 2026), highlighting the pace of the country’s clean-energy expansion and growing investor interest in the sector.

Addressing a roadshow for the Bharat Renewable Energy (RE) Summit & Expo 2026, which will take place between November 2 and 5, 2026, Mr. Joshi said India had crossed the 300 GW milestone this year, while about 17 GW of renewable energy capacity had been added in the first four months of the current financial year.

“We have crossed 300 GW already this year. We are well on track to reach the 2030 goal of 500 GW,” Mr. Joshi said. “This is the scale and the speed we are moving forward.”

As of July 31, India had 300.50 GW of installed non-fossil fuel capacity, accounting for more than 54% of its overall installed electricity generation capacity. Solar power accounted for 164.59 GW, making it the largest contributor to the country’s renewable energy capacity.

Mr. Joshi said global investors remained interested in India despite economic uncertainties, with eight to 10 countries expected to partner with the summit.

He also highlighted the expansion of the rooftop solar programme under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, which provides subsidies to households for installing rooftop solar systems. Mr. Joshi said around 19 lakh beneficiaries had received zero electricity bills under the programme.

Citing international recognition of India’s renewable energy expansion, Mr. Joshi referred to UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell calling India a ‘solar superpower’, and International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, who said that India has the potential to emerge as a major green-energy powerhouse.

Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, said policy measures, citizen-focused programmes including PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM, and renewable energy manufacturing initiatives had supported India’s renewable-energy expansion. According to him, India faced some key challenges, including grid integration, transmission infrastructure, digital integration and strengthening distribution networks.

G.B.N. Subramanian, Joint Secretary in the Ministry, said that Maharashtra had a total renewable-energy capacity of 62.53 GW as of July 2026, according to official figures. Maharashtra had also set a Guinness World Record after installing 45,911 solar agricultural pumps last year, he said.

The Bharat Renewable Energy Summit & Expo 2026 will focus on areas including investment and green financing, solar and wind power, green hydrogen, energy storage and grid integration, clean-energy manufacturing, bioenergy, distributed renewable energy, and more.

Along with the Bharat RE Summit & Expo 2026, the fifth Assembly of the International Solar Alliance and the fourth International Conference on Green Hydrogen will share India’s renewable energy projections.
