No two-wheelers on one stretch of Airport Road elevated corridor from September 4

Starting Friday, Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) will ban two-wheelers on the flyover from Sanjeevininagar Cross to Vidyashilpa Junction along Ballari Road and certain other categories of vehicles on four different elevated corridors in the city. Similar restrictions will be imposed on the Electronics City flyover from September 11.

Two-wheelers will be restricted on the flyover stretch starting from Sanjeevini Cross near Hebbal and ending at Vidyashilpa Junction near Yelahanka. The BTP has clarified that the Airport flyover will remain open to two-wheelers.

The restrictions on other categories of vehicles will apply to the B.G.S. Flyover on Mysore Road, the Peenya Elevated Corridor, and the Double Decker Flyover between Silk Board and Ragigudda.

The BTP said the restrictions would be monitored through CCTV surveillance and urged the public to cooperate with the initiative. According to BTP sources, the restrictions have been introduced to curb fatal accidents along the stretch.

BTP data accessed by The Hindu shows that the flyover stretch, banned for two-wheelers, witnessed 15 accidents in the last 19 months. Alarmingly, the number of fatal accidents along this stretch has been increasing since 2015. For instance, ten police stations registered fewer fatal accidents than this elevated corridor, according to the data.

Miscommunication causes chaos

As the BTP announced the restrictions earlier this week, several social media posts claimed that all flyovers in Bengaluru would be closed to two-wheelers, including the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) flyover.

In response to the false claims, nearly 400 bikers belonging to different groups took to the Airport Road, creating the Instagram hashtag #OneLastRide at 1 am on Thursday. A senior police officer told The Hindu that the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) brought all the bikers to the Airport police station, where officers clarified the restrictions being enforced.

However, several people took to social media to denounce the BTP’s move through an online campaign titled “Second Class Citizens,” implying that car users were being prioritised.
