A 10-year-old girl student at a government school in east Delhi’s Vinod Nagar died during treatment after suffering a seizure, with her family alleging days later that she had fallen ill after a teacher made her stand in the sun as punishment for not bringing a book. The teacher has been transferred. However, the police said a preliminary inquiry found no evidence to support the allegation.
According to the police, the girl died on August 27 at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) in east Delhi, where she had been undergoing treatment for nearly a month after suffering a seizure at school on July 22.
“After she suffered a seizure during school hours, the authorities called her parents and asked them to take her home. She was admitted to IHBAS, where she remained until her death. The family subsequently performed her final rites,” a senior police officer said.
On Monday, the family approached the school, alleging that the girl had died because of the punishment meted out to her. The school subsequently made a PCR call, following which the police conducted a preliminary inquiry.
“Preliminary verification of the medical and school records indicated that the cause of death was a seizure. We also questioned students and school staff and found no evidence that the girl had been made to stand in the sun. She had a history of epilepsy,” the officer said.
The inquiry also found that the parents had neither lodged a complaint nor raised any grievance with the school or the police regarding the incident when it occurred, more than a month before the girl’s death, the officer said.
“No case has been registered at this stage since the family is yet to submit a written complaint,” he added.
Teacher transferred
In a statement, Education Minister Ashish Sood said the accused teacher had been transferred with immediate effect to ensure that the “investigation was conducted fairly and without interference”.
“An inquiry is currently under way into the death of the student. The government is treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and sensitivity. If the inquiry establishes any negligence, dereliction of duty or irregularity at any level, strict and decisive action will be taken against those found responsible, in accordance with the law,” the Minister said.
