Prices of vegetables, except for drumsticks and beans, remain stable in Yadgir

Vegetable prices in Yadgir’s open market remained largely stable in the last few days barring the sharp spike in the prices of drumsticks and beans.

While most farm produces maintained price points similar to those seen during the weekend, drumsticks and beans saw a significant increase with both reaching ₹100 a kg.

Adversely, tomato prices witnessed a steep drop, falling to ₹30 a kg from ₹60 just a week earlier.

Onions saw a slight uptick, trading at ₹60 a kg. Other staple vegetables, including bitter gourd, cucumber, potato and lady’s finger, remained steady, selling in the range of ₹50 a kg to ₹60 a kg.

Commenting on the market trend, local vegetable vendor Mohammad Nawaz noted, “Onion prices fluctuate depending on the volume of arrivals from outside. However, tomato prices have decreased within the week, dropping to ₹30 a kg from ₹60 a kg.”

Traders also pointed out a preference split regarding salad staples like carrots and cucumbers.

Sharana Basava, a local restaurant operator, explained that the market currently has a higher supply of hybrid carrots.

“There is a distinct difference in taste between local and hybrid carrots. Most households prefer local varieties for home-cooked meals, whereas hybrid carrots are mostly bought by restaurants,” he said.

Yadgir relies heavily on arrivals from neighboring districts such as Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Raichur and Kurnool across the border in Andhra Pradesh owing to lack of local supplies.

”If the district headquarters receives a high volume of vegetable arrivals from local suppliers, prices stay stable. Otherwise, prices always fluctuate,” local buyer Mallikarjun Patil said and added that frequent supply disruptions during transit drive up retail rates.
