Neeraj will be picked if he performs well, says chief National coach Radhakrishnan Nair

Neeraj will be picked if he performs well, says chief National coach Radhakrishnan Nair

Posted on May 23, 2026 By admin

Neeraj is set to train in Bienne (Switzerland) from Monday.

Olympics and World championships medallist, javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, may make it to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games-bound Indian team if he performs well in June, said chief National coach Radhakrishnan Nair.

According to him, Neeraj — who is set to train in Bienne (Switzerland) from Monday following his rehab for a back injury in Turkiye — is expected to begin his season in June.

“Neeraj doesn’t have any back issues. He’ll be competing (in June). If he does well, we will definitely select him… provided he performs better than the athletes participating here,” said Nair during the Federation athletics meet, which is the last qualifying event for the CWG, at the Birsa Munda Stadium (Morabadi) here.

Asked whether Neeraj, who skipped 2022 CWG, would be able to compete in both the CWG and the Asian Games, Nair said: “Let’s see how he performs in June.”

Nair was confident about 5,000m and 10,000m National record holder Gulveer Singh’s chances of selection as the lone Indian in a world class CWG field.

“Gulveer has already performed. He did much better than anybody who performed in India.”

On steeplechaser Parul Chaudhary, he said, “Parul recently clocked 9:12.84, a mark close to her National record (in the Diamond League in China this month). That’s the second best time ever by an Indian (woman). The selection committee can decide about her CWG participation.”

Sable not fit

It’s learnt that CWG silver medallist steeplechaser Avinash Sable, who is in rehab following recurrence of an injury, was keen to return by July for Glasgow but did not get the go-ahead.

“Sable is not fit right now. But, he’s confident that he’ll be fit for the Asian Games. We’ve hopes from jumps — triple jump, long jump. Men’s javelin is our pet event, we can have even three participants. We’ve better chances in the Asian Games.”
