Bengaluru City Police return 692 lost mobile phones worth ₹1.75 crore to owners

Posted on May 17, 2026 By admin

Two weeks after recovering 692 stolen and misplaced mobile phones, the North East Division police on Sunday returned the devices to their rightful owners during a programme held at Kuvempu Hall in GKVK.

The recovered mobile phones, valued at around ₹1.75 crore, were traced through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) Portal from police station limits across the division.

Officials informed the public that lost or stolen mobile phones can be reported through the CEIR Portal, which also allows users to block lost mobile numbers and devices to prevent misuse.

Highlighting the rise in cybercrime, the police said nearly 90% of cyber offences are committed through mobile-based platforms. Citizens were warned against opening suspicious links sent under the guise of “free trip” offers or other attractive schemes, as such links could lead to hacking of bank accounts and theft of personal data.

The police also created awareness about online investment frauds, where cyber criminals initially gain victims’ trust by showing small profits before persuading them to invest larger amounts and eventually cheating them.

The officials pointed out that many educated individuals are now falling prey to online fraud due to greed and expectations of quick financial returns, often resulting in the loss of their entire savings. The public were advised never to share OTPs, banking credentials, or personal information with anyone and to avoid scanning QR codes received from unknown persons.

In cases of cyber fraud, citizens were urged to immediately contact the Cyber Helpline 1930. The police explained that the first hour after a cybercrime incident is considered the “golden hour”, and complaints registered within that period significantly improve the chances of recovering lost money.

Concern was also raised over the increasing number of youths and students falling victim to drug abuse. The police appealed to citizens to support anti-drug initiatives by sharing information related to narcotics through the KSP App, assuring confidentiality for informants.

The public were further advised to dial the emergency helpline 112 and to remain vigilant and responsible in both online and offline activities.
