The New Washermanpet police have arrested a B.Com graduate, employed at a software company, for allegedly cultivating ganja plant at his residence.
The man, identified as Edwin George, resided with his father at a Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board tenement in V.O.C. Nagar. His wife and mother lived separately following family disputes, the police said.
Based on a tip-off, a special team led by the Washermenpet Deputy Commissioner of Police conducted a search at his house.
During the search, officers found a ganja plant on the second-floor balcony of the building.
During interrogation, the accused claimed that he had grown the plant for religious purposes and that he regularly performed rituals for a deity at his residence, sources said.

The police also recovered a Home Guard uniform from the house during the search.
When questioned, George reportedly told officers that he was associated with the Tamil Nadu Home Guards.
After seizing the plant, the police arrested George and took him to the station for further inquiry.
