A 36-year-old history-sheeter from Thoothukudi was shot and apprehended after he allegedly opened fire on a police officer with a country-made gun while attempting to escape, at Kaniyalan Puthur village under the jurisdiction of the Tiruchendur Taluk police.

According to police sources, the history-sheeter had been identified as D. Mariya Antony Agnel from Mini Sahayapuram in Thoothukudi, who had around 30 cases against him, including that of murder and attempt to murder.

Petrol bomb case

Thoothukudi Town Deputy Superintendent of Police Sunil had nominated Sub-Inspector Raja Prabhu to arrest Mariya Antony in connection with a case in which he was accused of hurling a petrol bomb at a house.

Upon receiving credible information that Mariya Antony was spotted in Kaniyalan Puthur near Sonaganvilai, the SI, along with other police personnel, reached the area to arrest him.

Bid to flee

When the police attempted to apprehend him, Mariya Antony fired at Mr. Prabhu using a country-made gun, and attempted to flee. Mr. Prabhu reportedly opened fire in self-defence.

Both of them sustained injuries in the exchange of fire. They have been admitted to the Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
