The newly elected Chief Minister will also hold three administrative meetings in Nabanna on Monday (May 11). He will meet top officials of the state administration. After this, he is likely to meet with District Magistrates in the afternoon. He will also meet top officials of the State police. According to sources, the meeting will be attended by the Director General of West Bengal police, the Commissioner of Police of Kolkata and other high-ranking officials of various zones in the State. On Sunday (May 10), Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand and Howrah Police Commissioner Akhilesh Chaturvedi visited Nabanna and took stock of the security arrangements.

Task is to rebuild Bengal

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has weighed regional and community considerations while allocating ministerial berths in its first Cabinet in West Bengal.

Along with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, five other MLAs were administered the oath of office and secrecy by West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi on Saturday (May 9, 2026). The new Ministers — Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu, and Nisith Pramanik — represent different regions and different caste combinations aimed at social and geographic balance.

Mr. Adhikari is a Brahmin, Mr. Ghosh hails from the OBC community, Ms. Paul is a Kayastha, Mr. Kirtania is a prominent Matua face, and Mr. Tudu represents the tribal belt of Junglemahal. Mr. Pramanik is seen as an influential Rajbanshi leader from north Bengal.

Mr. Ghosh, who was elected from Kharagpur Sadar, is a former West Bengal BJP president and one of the most vocal party leaders in the State. Under his leadership, the BJP had won 18 out of 42 Lok Sabha seats from West Bengal.

Sole woman Minister

A fashion designer turned politician, Ms. Paul is a prominent woman face of the BJP and had become the party’s voice both inside and outside the State Assembky from 2021 to 2016. She has been re-elected from the Asansol Dakshin Assembly seat.

Mr. Kirtania, who has been elected from Bongaon Uttar, is a representative of the Matuas, a community of Hindu namasudras which has overwhelmingly supported the BJP. All these Ministers represent South Bengal.

As the tribal face in the State Cabinet, Mr. Tudu took his oath in the Santali language. He was elected from Ranibandh in the Bankura district.

Mr. Pramanik, who was the Cooch Behar MP from 2019 to 2024, won the Assembly election from Mathabhanga and is the Cabinet’s only face from North Bengal.

Scope for expansion

Article (164(1A) of the Constitution mandates that the total number of Ministers, including the Chief Minister, cannot exceed 15% of the total number of members in the Legislative Assembly

As there are 294 seats in the West Bengal Assembly, the highest number of Ministers that can be appointed is 44. There is a lot of scope of expansion of the Council of Ministers, but a decision will be taken after the swearing-in of all the newly elected MLAs.

While the BJP legislature party has appointed its Chief Minister and five other Ministers, the Trinamool Congress legislature party is yet to announce the Leader of Opposition. Ballygunge MLA Sovandeb Chattopadhyay is being considered a front runner for the post.

The BJP won 207 seats in the 294-member House ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress and reducing it just 80 seats.

The Trinamool Congress on Saturday (May 9, 2026) nominated senior party leader and Ballygunge MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition in the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

Mr. Chattopadhyay, 82, had served as the State Minister of Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs earlier.

A press statement signed by Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee said the party will have two deputy leaders of Opposition in the House – Dhanekhali MLA Asima Patra and Chowringhee. MLA Nayna Bandyopadhya.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation Mayor and Kolkata Port MLA Firhad Hakim has been nominated as the Trinamool Chief Whip in the Assembly.

Since party chairperson Mamata Banerjee lost the Assembly polls from Bhabanipur, she will not be present in the House. The responsibility of leading 80 MLAs of the Trinamool Congress will fall on Mr. Chattopadhyay. During the day, the party chairperson said: “We will continue to be a strong, vocal and uncompromising opposition both in Delhi and West Bengal.”

A special session of the Assembly is likely to be convened soon where the newly elected MLAs will be administered an oath. The BJP had won 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly.

Chandranath Rath, the close aide of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari who was shot dead in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, had travelled an unusual path — from serving in the Indian Air Force to becoming one of the Opposition leader’s most trusted political associates.

Rath, 41, originally hailed from Chandipur in Purba Medinipur district, the political turf that shaped Mr. Adhikari’s rise in Bengal politics, party sources said.

Soft-spoken and low-profile, he remained largely away from public attention despite being part of Mr. Adhikari’s inner circle for years.

Before entering active political organisational work, Rath had spent nearly two decades in the Indian Air Force after completing his studies at Rahara Ramakrishna Mission.

People close to the family said he had once considered a spiritual life and was deeply influenced by the Ramakrishna Mission ethos during his student years.

After taking voluntary retirement from the Air Force, he briefly worked in the corporate sector before gradually moving into political coordination and administrative responsibilities.

His family, like Mr. Adhikari’s, had earlier been associated with the Trinamool Congress.

His mother Hasi Rath had held a position in a local panchayat body in Purba Medinipur during the TMC years before shifting allegiance to the BJP along with Adhikari in 2020.

Family acquaintances said the connection between the Rath family and Mr. Adhikari went back more than two decades to the early years of the TMC’s expansion in Purba Medinipur.

Rath formally became part of Mr. Adhikari’s official team around 2019, when the latter was serving as a Minister in the Mamata Banerjee government.

He initially handled responsibilities linked to Mr. Adhikari’s ministerial office and later continued in a similar role after Mr. Adhikari crossed over to the saffron camp.

Over the years, Rath emerged as a key backroom figure in Mr. Adhikari’s political operations, coordinating organisational work, managing logistics and maintaining communication with party workers.

BJP insiders described him as someone who enjoyed Mr. Adhikari’s complete confidence and was often involved in sensitive assignments linked to campaign management and political coordination.

He was also part of the core team during several high-voltage political battles, including the BJP’s Bhabanipur campaign.

Within sections of the BJP organisation, there had even been speculation that Rath could be entrusted with a larger administrative responsibility if Mr. Adhikari assumed a bigger role in government after the Assembly polls.

Those discussions came to an abrupt end on Wednesday (May 6, 2026) night when motorcycle-borne assailants allegedly intercepted his vehicle near Madhyamgram’s Doharia area and opened fire at close range.

His killing has triggered sharp political reactions in Bengal and intensified the already volatile atmosphere following the Assembly election results.

Kolkata:

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is facing criticism from Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Suvendu Adhikari for shifting the blame to the Border Security Force (BSF) regarding infiltration in the state.

Mr Adhikari accused Ms Banerjee of indulging in “low-level politics” by blaming the BSF for infiltration, stating that the security forces serve the nation, not the government.

“The security forces serve the nation and not the government. They are the protectors of the nation. The way you have blamed our soldiers for the infiltration happening in West Bengal in the last few days displays the lowest level of your politics,” Mr Adhikari wrote in the letter.

On Thursday, Mamata Banerjee alleged that the Border Security Force (BSF) was facilitating militants and infiltrators from Bangladesh to enter the state and further stated that because of this there were disruptions in the region.

In his letter, Mr Adhikari termed the Chief Minister’s comment an insult to security forces.

“Allegations and counter-allegations indeed occur in politics. But dragging security forces into it, insulting them and passing the buck for your failures to them is nothing but substandard politics. This is an insult to the 75,000 personnel of the CAPFS, 33,000 BSF personnel in Bengal and all the soldiers of the nation,” he said.

“It is deeply painful to see our valiant soldiers being insulted. Our security forces risk their lives to protect the borders of our nation and the citizens regardless of whether it is shivering cold, searing heat, tempestuous rain or a disaster. The nation will never forget your insulting words about our soldiers,” he added.

He pointed out that a major stretch of the country’s border is open, due to adverse geographical conditions. In some places there are inaccessible forests; in others, there are swollen rivers and snow-covered mountains.

“Infiltrators use these adversities to their advantage, entering our territory and starting to live in the villages,” he said.

Mr Adhikari also pointed out that the state government’s lack of cooperation with the BSF on border-related subjects is a significant issue. He questioned how infiltrators are able to obtain identity cards, ration cards, and other documents, suggesting that the state government’s officials are not doing their job properly.

“When these infiltrators come to a village, then why do the patwaris make their identity cards? How do they get their ration cards made? How do the police and other officials verify them as Bona fide citizens and issue their identity cards?” he asked the Chief Minister.

He also accused the West Bengal government of not cooperating with the BSF on border-related subjects.

Earlier, Ms Banerjee had remarked that the BSF, which is responsible for guarding the borders, was allowing individuals to cross into India from regions such as Islampur, Sitai, and Chopra and questioned the motives behind this and attributed it to a “blueprint” from the central government. She had said that the situation would not have been possible without the central government’s involvement.

West Bengal’s Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari was in Sandeshkhali today, a day after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid the obscure riverine island a visit.

Sandeshkhali was in the news earlier in the year, especially in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections, when there were allegations of exploitation of women and land grab. The BJP’s campaign in West Bengal during the Lok Sabha elections pivoted around Sandeshkhali.

Yesterday Mamata Banerjee had termed the Sandeshkhali allegations as lies and said there was a huge game of money being played there.  Suvendu Adhikari – once a close aide of Ms Banerjee who joined the BJP ahead of the 2021 assembly election — hit back.

“If there is a BJP government formed in the state, there will be a commission on the Sandeshkhali incident. And for the women you’ve sent to jail, remember the BJP will send you to jail for making these women go to jail in false cases. We will take revenge, with interest,” Mr Adhikari said.

Though Sandeshkhali became a major campaign pitch for the Lok Sabha election earlier in the year, the Trinamool held its ground despite the protests against its local leaders and won the Basirhat Lok Sabha seat, under which the Sandeshkhali assembly seat comes.

The BJP had fielded Rekha Patra, a woman from Sandeshkhali as its candidate, and the party may repeat her again when the bye-polls are announced.

Basirhat will see a bye-election again due to the death of its Member of Parliament Haji Nurul Islam and once again the Sandeshkhali issue is likely to feature prominently.

With an eye to the by-polls, Ms Banerjee had appealed to the women voters in her speech yesterday, saying, “Don’t fall into the trap of bad men. And women must remember not to go even if someone calls you”.

“If someone misleads you, or lies to you, I know there is a huge game of money here. Later you saw everything turned out to be false. Lies don’t last long, they are exposed one day,” she had said.

Kolkata:

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will visit the riverine island of Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district today– a first since the sexual harassment controversy broke out ahead of the Lok Sabha election. But the Leader of Opposition, BJP’s  Suvendu Adhikari will not be far behind. Mr Adhikari has announced that he would hold a ‘Jana Sanjog Yatra’ in the area the day after the Chief Minister’s visit.

The Chief Minister will be heading for Sandeshkhali early today to chair a public distribution programme.

The obscure island in West Bengal had hit the headlines earlier this year, before the Lok Sabha elections.

Its trigger was the protest by the locals against alleged incidents of sexual assault and land grabbing. They blamed the local Trinamool strongman Sheikh Shahjahan — who has since been suspended by the party — and his two aides, Shibu Prasad Hazra and Uttam Sardar.

The Trinamool later held a press conference on a series sting operations in which a video surfaced on social media. It showed a former BJP leader purportedly claiming that the whole episode was “scripted by the BJP”.

The Trinamool said the allegations of sexual harassment were politically motivated, meant to defame the party.

The BJP claimed the allegations were an example of the Trinamool misrule and exploitation of women.

In the Lok Sabha election, the Trinamool Congress won the Basirhat seat, within which the Sandeshkhali assembly seat is located.

Sheikh Shahjahan was arrested on February 29  after he managed to evade the police for around two months. He went on the run after his supporters attacked three Enforcement Directorate officials who visited Sandeshkhali on January 5. The attack had let the officials injured.
