Due to continuous rainfall in the catchment area of Khadakwasla Dam, the dam reached its full capacity on July 25.

As per information from the District Information Office, the Pune administration increased the speed and released the water into the Mutha River on Thursday at 6 a.m. at a rate of 40,000 cusecs.

Earlier on Thursday, at 4 a.m., water was released at a speed of 27203 cusecs.

An alert has been issued to the residents living along the riverbanks to be careful. Additionally, due to heavy rains in Pune on Wednesday night, water entered the houses and buildings located in Ekta Nagri and Vitthal Nagar areas.

The Pune Fire Department has brought boats to evacuate the people from the residences. Additionally, the District Information Office has also predicted gusty winds at the rate of 50 to 60 km per hour likely to occur in isolated places over Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and moderate ran in Kolhapur and the Ghat areas of Pune in the next three hours.

Orders have been given by District Magistrate Suhas Diwas to keep the schools in Pune closed as the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Bhor, Velha, Maval, Mulshi, Haveli and the Khadakwasla areas.

Advisories have also been issued to the public to stay indoors and venture out only if necessary.

Additionally, the Indian Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Maharashtra on Thursday and has predicted extremely heavy rainfall.

On Wednesday, an orange alert has also been issued in the state warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 to 204.4 mm) from July 26 to July 27 in Maharashtra.

An orange alert was also issued for Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts in Maharashtra’s Konkan region.

On Thursday, the Brihan Mumbai Metropolitan Council (BMC) said that on Thursday and Friday, there would be moderate to heavy rain in the city and suburbs with the possibility of very heavy rainfall at isolated places. Occasional gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph are very likely.

On Thursday, High Tide is expected at 2:51 p.m. Mumbai city and suburbs are also likely to experience moderate to heavy rains and heavy rains at some places. Meanwhile, gusty winds with a speed of 50 to 60 km per hour are likely to occur at times.

Downpour disrupts public transport services in Mumbai

The Andheri Subway in Mumbai has been closed for vehicular movement following waterlogging from the persistent rainfall.

The downpours have brought back woes for Mumbai and the suburbs, with waterlogging reported from several low-lying areas in the city.

The heavy rainfall overnight has disrupted some public transport services causing inconvenience to countless commuters.

The forecast indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall in isolated places. Occasional gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph are also very likely.

As per the BMC, Vihar Lake, one of the 7 lakes supplying water to the entire Mumbai metropolitan area, started overflowing at around 3.50 a.m. today. The full storage capacity of Vihar Lake is 2,769.8 crore litres (27,698 million litres).

Five soldiers killed, five injured as militants attack Army convoy in J&K’s Kathua

Five Army soldiers were killed and five were injured in an ambush by militants in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. Following the attack, the Army engaged the attackers in a firefight, which is still continuing.

Preliminary reports suggested that an Army patrol, comprising light and heavy vehicles, came under fire from two directions when the convoy reached Jenda Nallah in Badnota village, which is 124 km away from Kathua town. The incident took place around 3.30 p.m. The patrolling vehicles were from the Army’s 9 Corps (Rising Star Corps).

As heavy overnight rain left Mumbai struggling, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday appealed to people not to leave home unless necessary. He said he has also asked the Police Commissioner not to allow anyone near the beaches.

Some areas in Mumbai received 300 mm of rainfall between 1-7 am this morning, leaving the streets waterlogged and impacting trains and flights. It’s still raining after a break.

Speaking to reporters about how Mumbai is trying to cope with the challenging situation, Mr Shinde detailed the steps taken by the civic and rescue teams.

Railway tracks were submerged at several places and the Railways, NDRF, and civic officials pumped out a lot of water, he said. The trains are running now.

“461 motor pumps of the municipal corporation and 200 pumps of the Railways are running. I have been in touch with all the departments since morning. Central and Harbour rail line services have started. I took stock of the entire state. There is an orange alert in coastal areas. Army, Navy, and Air Force have been asked to stay on alert,” said the Chief Minister.

Besides, seven pumping stations are also being built in the city, he said.

The Chief Minister said civic officials have been deployed in the waterlogged areas while schools have been given holidays and all agencies put on alert to avoid any untoward incident.

Mumbai is the only city with micro-tunneling, which is helping in draining the water, he said.

The city witnessed heavy downpour in the last 24 hours with the Met department issuing an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and the Konkan Belt. Orange alert signifies the need to stay prepared amid heavy rain forecast.

Videos showed locals wading through waist-deep waters across the city while passengers at Dombivli waited for trains on submerged tracks. Over 50 flights have been cancelled and airlines warned fliers to leave for the airport only after checking their flight status.

Mumbai has recorded over 300 mm rainfall at various places in a six-hour period from 1 am to 7 am on July 7. Heavy rains in some low-lying areas led to waterlogging and disruption of suburban train services.

A BMC official said, “Heavy rain is also expected today. In order to avoid inconvenience to students, a holiday for the first session is declared for all BMC, Government and Private schools and colleges in the Mumbai (BMC area).”

The decision for the next session will be announced after reviewing the situation, a BMC official said.
