The India vs England Test series was entertaining on all aspects. While the five-match contest offered some gritty knocks and promising spells, it also saw a world record being registered in terms of sixes. India and England together hit a total of 102 sixes, which is the most in any Test series. Rohit Sharma and Co. hit 72 of them while guests England smashed the remaining 30. Out of the ones India hit, Yashasvi Jaiswal individually accounted for 29 sixes. He also went on to break Rohit’s world record of hitting most sixes in a Test series.

When asked to comment on India’s six-hitting spree in the series, head coach Rahul Dravid came out with a funny reply.

“I was just showing (the team) videos of me batting, man. So they are hitting sixes now,” said Dravid to host broadcaster after the game.

“But it is incredible to watch, and that is one facet of the game that is at a different level. We have got someone (Rohit Sharma) who is the greatest six-hitter India has ever produced. It is phenomenal – the (six) hitting power, the skill, the ability. Every time they hit the ball, it seems to go out. It’s amazing,” he added.

India, who had lost the first Test match of the series, went on to seal the contest 4-1. The Rohit-led side showed a remarkable turnaround to seal the series in its favour.

The victory saw India becoming the first team after 112 years to register a 4-1 win after losing the first game. Before this, England was the team to do so back in 1912 in the Ashes series against Australia.

Jaiswal topped the scorers’ chart with a total of 712 runs to his name across 9 innings. He averaged 89. It is worth noting that the second-most run-getter in the series was Shubman Gill, having a 260-run gap with Jaiswal.

In the bowling department, Ravichandran Ashwin aced with 26 wickets, averaging 24.81.

Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team thrived on the impatience of England batters for an emphatic innings and 64-run victory in the final chapter of an action-packed five-match contest, handing the visitors their heaviest defeat in the ‘Bazball’ era. With the series already in bag, India were playing for crucial World Test Championship points and England made their job simpler by self-imploding on day three in Dharamsala. After the match, former England captain Nasser Hussain said that Ben Stokes and Co. lost the series as they got “lost” in all the talks revolving around Bazball.

“There is too much said and written about Bazball. We get lost in that term and the team do not like it. It is about individual performances in those conditions,” wrote Hussain on Sky Sports.

The game in Dharamsala saw James Anderson becoming the first-ever pacer to claim 700 wickets in Test cricket.

It was also the 100th Test match for Ravichandran Ashwin and he too scripted history with his sensational performance. The off-spinner from India became the first bowlers in 147-year history of cricket to claim five-wicket-in-an-innings on debut and 100th Test. Ashwin ended the game with a total of 9 wickets.

“The reason James Anderson, who took his 700th wicket in the Test, and Ravichandran Ashwin, who took nine wickets in his 100th Test, have ended up greats of the game is because they are constantly trying to improve. After a poor Ashes series, Jimmy wanted to increase his run-up speed going into the crease, feeling he needed a bit more zip at the age of 41,” said the former England captain.

“Ashwin is learning all the time, about seam positions and how to deliver the ball. You also look at Version Two of India spinner Kuldeep Yadav. That is so much better than Version One because he has tried to improve,” he added.

Yashasvi Jaiswal continues his red-hot form in Test cricket. The southpaw smashed 57 runs off 58 balls during India’s first innings against England in Dharamshala to smash numerous records. Batting with great confidence, Jaiswal scored at a strike rate of 98.28. His blitzkrieg also included three sixes that he hit in only one over of England spinner Sohaib Bashir. After Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav shared 9 wickets among them to bundle out England for 218, Jaiswal and captain Rohit Sharma dominated the guests before the southpaw lost his wicket to Bashir.

Here are the record broken by Jaiswal –

– Jaiswal is the first India batter in 45 years to score 700 or more runs in a Test series. Overall, he is only the second India batter after Sunil Gavaskar to score 700 or more runs in a Test series.

– He has surpassed Virat Kohli on the list of India batters with most runs vs England in a Test series. Jaiswal holds the top spot with 712 runs to his name in the series so far.

– With 26 sixes in nine innings, Jaiswal further extended his record of hitting most maximums in a Test series. Rohit trails him with 19 sixes against South Africa in 2019-20.

Meanwhile, Jaiswal also became the second fastest India batter to 1000 Test runs. He achieved the feat in 16 innings. Jaiswal is only behind Vinod Kambli, who scored 100 Test runs in 14 innings.

22 years, 70 days old Jaiswal is now the fourth youngest batter to cross the 1000 runs in the Test mark and joined the elite list of legends like Sachin Tendulkar (19Y, 217D), Kapil Dev (21Y, 27D), Ravi Shastri (21Y, 197D), and Dilip Vengsarkar (22Y, 293D).

Rohit Sharma made a DRS error during England’s first innings vs India in the Dharamsala Test. On the fifth ball of the 26th over, England opener Zak Crawley missed a glance shot on the bowling of India spinner Kuldeep Yadav. The ball hit wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel and lobbed towards the leg side where Sarfaraz Khan showed good reflexes to grab it before it could fall on the ground. What followed was a massive appeal from India, especially Sarfaraz. The ground umpires were unconvinced but Sarfaraz was sure about a wicket there. However, Jurel thought otherwise and that saw Rohit turning down the request for Sarfaraz for a DRS.

To the captain’s surprise, the replays and UltraEdge confirmed that Crawley had edged the ball. After watching it on the big screen, Sarfaraz did nothing but give a smile with the Indian skipper laughing in return.

Watch it here:

The fragility of England’s batters against high-quality spin was exposed once again before India showed them how to bat on a flat track by cruising to 135 for one at stumps on day one of the fifth and final Test on Thursday.

Opting to bat, England were all at sea against the mastery of left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav whose fourth five-wicket haul in Tests allowed India to bowl out the visitors for 218 in their first innings shortly after tea.

Playing his 100th Test, R Ashwin cleaned up the tail with four wickets while Ravindra Jadeja took one. Contrary to expectations, all 10 wickets went to the spinners at the scenic HPCA Stadium and the last seven batsmen fell while adding only 43 runs.

India came out to bat in bright sunshine and Rohit Sharma (52 batting off 83 balls) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (57 off 58b) put the hosts in firm control with a 104-run stand. India reached 135 for one in 30 overs at close. Shubman Gill (26 off 39b) was batting alongside Rohit.

It was the highest opening stand of this series for India and was broken when Jaiswal got a bit carried away to be stumped off Shoaib Bashir after collecting back-to-back boundaries.

The southpaw’s pre-meditated charge down the ground came soon after he became only the second Indian to amass 700 runs in a series after the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who achieved the feat twice against the West Indies in 1971 and 1978-79.

The ball did not do much for the England pacers and spinners compared to their Indian counterparts. Jaiswal was watchful to start with and waited for the spinners to be in operation. He put Bashir to sword in his very first over by dispatching him for three sixes into the stands, two of them over extra cover.

The Indian skipper, at the other end, too played confidently. He made his intentions clear by pulling a rising delivery of Mark Wood over fine leg for six in the fourth over of the innings.

His second maximum came off spinner Tom Hartley in the cow corner region.

India’s spin veteran Ravichandran Ashwin on Thursday reached the milestone of 100 Test matches, with his appearance in the fifth and final game against England in Dharamshala. He was felicitated by India’s head coach Rahul Dravid ahead of the game for achieveing the feat. Ashwin, who is one of the most successful all-rounders of the modern era, credited the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, besides thanking his family on playing playing the 100th Test of his career.

“I mean, I’ve been lucky and blessed to have Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara at slip and leg slip. I had Virat Kohli at short midwicket, Pujara at leg slip, Ajinkya at slip forever. That is impenetrable. If I have to thank someone beyond my family, it’s those three. Along with Rohit (Sharma) taking some catches at short leg. Rohit has filled in for Ajinkya at slip,” Ashwin told The Cricket Monthly.

Before the match on the green fields of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) amid the beautiful and snowy mountains, Ashwin received a special cap meant to symbolise his 100th Test appearance, a privilege that only 13 Indians could get before him.

Now, he has joined the elite company of Sachin Tendulkar (200 Tests), Rahul Dravid (163 Tests), VVS Laxman (134 Tests), Anil Kumble (132 Tests), Kapil Dev (131 Tests), Sunil Gavaskar (125 Tests), Dilip Vengesarkar (116 Tests), Saurav Ganguly and Virat Kohli (113 Tests), Ishant Sharma (105 Tests), Cheteshwar Pujara, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag (103 Tests) in the elite company of Indian players having made a century of matches in white coloured clothing.

Present with Ashwin during the felicitation ceremony was his wife Prithi and his children, who were also really happy to see the Indian legend receive this special honour of playing a century of Tests for the Asian giants.

Following this, a special guard of honour was also given to Ashwin by his teammates as they took to the field for the match.

Rohit Sharma once again showed his class during the ongoing England Test series, this time in the fifth and final game in Dharamshala. The India captain scored runs at a brisk pace during the hosts’ first innings in the match after they bowled out England for a below-par total of 218. Rohit raced to his 18th Test fifty in 77 balls and en route for the milestone, he took the England bowlers to the cleaners with some sensational strokes. One of them included a superb pull shot.

On the fourth ball of the 4th over of India’s innings, Mark Wood bowled a 151.2 kmph short ball but Rohit’s response to it was even better. He quickly transfered his weight on the backfoot and brought out his trademark pull shot to see the ball sail over the fine leg fence for a six.

Watch it here:

Kuldeep Yadav, who grabbed five wickets, and 100th Test man Ravichandran Ashwin helped India bundle out England for a woeful 218 in their first innings on Day 1 of the fifth Test on Thursday.

Kuldeep (5/72) and Ashwin (4/51) ran through the England batting line-up as the visitors lost eight wickets for 118 runs across post-lunch and post-tea sessions.

Opener Zak Crawley (79, 108 balls) offered lone resistance for England.

There were two partnerships in the middle-order — 37 between Crawley and Joe Root for third wicket and 38 between Root and 100-Test-man Jonny Bairstow for the fourth wicket — but they were not sufficient for the visitors.

There was a point in England innings when they lost five wickets for mere eight runs as Kuldeep, Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja got into the act.

Youngster Devdutt Padikkal made his Test debut for India on Thursday in the Dharamshala match against England. The southpaw received his Test cap from Ravichandran Ashwin, who made 100th appearance in the format. Heaping praises on Padikkal, Ashwin advised the young batter to guard and cherish the moment and express himself on the ground. It is worth noting that left-handed batter Padikkal was included in India’s playing XI as Rajat Patidar missed the final Test match against England due to injury.

“As a very young kid who came on, burst onto the scene, captivated the imagination of a lot of people through T20 cricket, came up through the ranks as the star-studded boy from his state. He went through something that a youngster will also always find hard to go to,” said Ashwin praising Padikkal.

The youngster had to go through a lot due to a COVID-19 infection and a stomach-related health complication. From 2021 to early 2023, he kept struggling to stay fit.

“Physical trauma literally was found hanging in balance whether he would play cricket. Life has been very kind, he has fought through it. Maybe that’s what makes you a much more harder individual and a harder cricketer to go through life,” said Ashwin.

“Today, he is standing amongst us, going to make his debut in this wonderful setting along with my 100th Test. But Dev, remember one thing, Karnataka has produced a lot of wonderful international cricketers, the man is standing opposite to you, but mind you, that’s not your burden to carry. Today is your day. Guard it, cherish it, and express yourself,” he added.

The fragility of England batters against high-quality spin was exposed once again before India showed them how to bat on a flat track by cruising to 135 for one at stumps on day one of the fifth and final Test in Dharamshala on Thursday.

He made his intentions clear by pulling a 150kmph rising delivery off Mark Wood over fine leg for six in the fourth over of the innings.

His second maximum came off spinner Tom Hartley in the cow corner region.

However, India’s march to command started in the second session when they reduced the visitors to 194 for eight at tea as Kuldeep engineered a middle-order collapse that saw England lose three wickets for no run.

All of a sudden England found themselves reeling at 175 for six from three down on the same score.

England lost six wickets in the middle session for 94 runs.

Kuldeep could have got rid of Zak Crawley (79 off 108) on the second ball after lunch break but India opted against DRS for a catch.

But the 29-year-old spinner did not have to wait long thereafter as he got one to turn massively from the imaginary fifth stump to shatter the England opener’s leg-stump. Both the inward drift and the sharp turn led to Crawley’s dismissal.

Jonny Bairstow (29 off 19b), who is also playing his 100th Test, showed plenty of intent in his innings but could not last long. Like the other batters, he could not read Kuldeep from his hands and got a faint outside edge off a googly.

He went for a review but ended up wasting it, exactly what Joe Root (26) and Ben Stokes (0) did on the same score of 175. Jadeja trapped Root in front with a straighter one after beating the English batter’s outside edge on the previous ball.

Stokes was the fifth victim of Kuldeep who had the opposition skipper plumb in front with a googly. Kuldeep ended up bowling 15 overs straight on either side of the lunch and afternoon session.

Ashwin sent back Hartley and Wood in quick session to join the spinners’ party. In the morning, Crawley made a classy unbeaten half-century after surviving an extended opening spell from the Indian pacers before Kuldeep struck twice to leave the visitors at 100 for two at lunch.

On expected lines, the skillful duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj made the ball talk but Ben Duckett (27 off 58) and Crawley were able to see off the first 14 overs of fast bowling after being beaten multiple times.

Crawley, who has been England’s stand-out batter in this series, was meticulous with his shot selection and played some delightful cover drives off pacers on way to his half-century.

Siraj ended up bowling eight overs in the morning session and Bumrah seven with both conceding 24 runs.

Kuldeep came to bowl in the 18th over and struck instantly.

Despite being hit for two fours off his first five balls, Kuldeep was not afraid to flight the ball and was rewarded when Duckett’s mistimed hit was pouched by Gill, who took a spectacular catch running backwards from cover. Like Duckett, Crawley too was beaten by the pacers in the first hour of play but he picked the right balls to flaunt his cover drives.

He reached his fourth half-century of the series with a boundary down the ground but that remained the only bright spot for England this day.
