New Delhi:

A student has been arrested after an Audi convertible allegedly driven by him rammed a scooter in Delhi, injuring two men, one of whom is in a critical condition.

Officials said the red Audi hit the scooter late on Monday night near the Jor Bagh post office in south Delhi’s upscale Lodhi Road area. The rider and pillion rider of the scooter were injured and rushed to the AIIMS trauma centre.

“There were two BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) students in the Audi, which was being driven recklessly. The car rammed the scooter and then hit a tree. A case of rash driving and endangering the safety of others was registered and the driver of the Audi has been arrested. The two men on the scooter – identified as Naitik and Tushar – were taken to the AIIMS trauma centre. One of them is stable while the other is critical,” said a police official.

Videos showed the front of the car badly damaged, indicating the speed with which it must have hit the scooter and then the tree. The hood can be seen stubbed, completely losing its shape,  while one of the wheels has turned, facing parallel to the rest of the car. The signature four-circle logo of the car was also detached and found lying next to the tree, bent out of shape.

Naitik’s relative, Shubham, said he suffered an injury on his leg. 

“The Audi car was coming at a high speed and hit the scooty…the condition of one of the injured is serious. We have not seen Naitik’s condition, so we cannot say anything about him. He has an injury on his leg. Both the accused have been caught by the police,” Shubham told news agency ANI. 

The Delhi incident took place hours after two students were arrested for performing stunts in a Fortuner and a BMW on an important road in Hyderabad. CCTV footage showed the Fortuner doing donuts (going around in circles using the handbrake) in the middle lane of the five-lane Outer Ring Road while a BMW drives to the side after doing the same thing.

Police said the drivers of the vehicles had removed the number plates to avoid being identified.

New Delhi:

A man, who was on his way to distribute invitation cards for his wedding, died after the car he was travelling in caught fire in Delhi on Saturday night. The incident took place near Baba Banquet Hall in Ghazipur.

According to the police, the victim burned to death inside the car.

Visuals of the incident site show the Wagon R completely charred – especially the driver’s side.

The victim, a resident of Nawada in Greater Noida, was to get married on February 14, officials said.

“He went out to distribute his wedding invitation cards in the afternoon. When he did not return till late evening, we tried calling him but his phone was switched off. Around 11-11:30, the police called us saying there was an accident and Anil is in hospital,” the victim’s elder brother Sumit said.

According to the victim’s brother-in-law, Yogesh, he and Anil used to work together.

“Anil was to marry my sister on February 14…We got to know about his death last night. We still don’t know how the car caught fire,” he said.

The cause behind the blaze is not yet known.

The victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem and the investigation is underway, officials said.

In another incident last month, a man set his neighbour’s car on fire in Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar area reportedly over a parking dispute. Rahul Bhasin, the main accused, would have regular arguments with Ranjeet Chauhan over parking, according to news agency PTI. Owing to one such argument, he decided to set Mr Chauhan’s car on fire with his friends. The entire incident was caught on CCTV.

New Delhi:

A 56-year-old man was carrying his seven-year-old grandson in his arms, walking down a street in Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar this morning. It was 10:11 am and a speeding Hyundai Santro rammed them, dragging the boy along with it.

The man, Rajesh Kumar Kamra, and his grandson, Mannat, were injured in the accident which was caught on CCTV. The police said a 17-year-old boy was driving the white Santro. Visuals showed the man and his grandson on the left side of the road and the car suddenly steered right and came in their direction. 

Mr Kamra tried to dodge the vehicle but it was a matter of split seconds, the Santro first hit a white scooty, then Mr Kamra, and then four people, who were standing in a corner on the street.

The scooter tripped and the rider tried to get up but struggled, the 56-year-old man turned around to see his grandson trapped under the rear wheels of the car. People rushed and stopped the car which was reversing. They pulled the boy out, who suffered injuries in the accident, which could have turned fatal.

The 17-year-old is in police custody and the car has been seized. The cops have also initiated action against the owner of the car.

New Delhi:

Two BBA students died after falling from the fourth floor of their paying guest accommodation in Rohini on Monday, an official said.

The police had earlier said the duo — Ishaan, a resident of Rajasthan’s Bharatpur, and Harsh of Delhi’s Palam Colony — had jumped their death. They were pursuing BBA from Delhi Technological University (DTU) and Bhagwan Parshuram Institute of Technology (BPIT), he said.

“A PCR call was received at 1:10 am at the KNK Marg police station informing that two boys had fallen from the terrace of a building. The police team immediately visited the scene.

“Upon local enquiry, it was found the two individuals, who were in a room on the fourth floor of a PG accommodation, had fallen through the window,” a senior police officer said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Amit Goel, in a statement, said the spot was visited by a forensic department team and the cause of the fall was found to be accidental.

A source said both the students were roommates and they shifted to the paying guest (PG) accommodation two months ago. On Sunday night, a few of their common friends had come to meet the duo.

The police also checked if they were partying or if any fight had taken place.

“Other witnesses were also examined and they said the students indulged in a friendly fight which led to their fall from the window,” the officer added.

The CCTV footage near the spot was scanned but nothing suspicious has been found, the officer said, adding the bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination.

An inquest proceedings were underway, police said.

According to BPIT principal Payal Phawa, Ishaan was a first-year BBA student at the private institute affiliated with the IP University.

“We received the information about Ishaan’s death this evening from the police. We are currently looking into the records of the student and will be able to make any comment accordingly.” Pahwa said.

New Delhi:

At least seven school children and the driver of the van in which they were travelling were injured after a school bus rammed into it in southwest Delhi on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The injured were taken to a hospital, where the children were discharged after treatment for minor bruises. The van driver is recuperating in the hospital, police said.

The accident took place at Basantara Line near Kendriya Vidyalaya.

The school bus belonged to St Thomas School in Dwarka and the Eeco van was carrying the children from Kendriya Vidyalaya Number 1. All children were below seven years of their age.

“Both the vehicles had a head-on collision. It is suspected that the bus was moving on the wrong side due to which the accident took place. A case under the relevant section of the IPC has been registered and investigation is underway,” a police officer said.

Naveen Kumar, the 25-year-old school bus driver who had fled from the spot, was later arrested.

Parents of students later took them to other hospitals for medical examination, said police.
