SWOT Analysis IPL 2024: Will Rishabh Pant’s Return Propel Delhi Capitals To Title Triumph?

Posted on March 20, 2024 By admin

Delhi Capitals (DC) are preparing for the 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League by welcoming their skipper Rishabh Pant back to the squad. Pant suffered a near-death road accident in late 2022 which ruled him out of action for more than a year but he is now raring to make a return to the team by leading from the front.

Last year, the David Warner-led DC did not fare well and finished in the ninth spot with five wins and nine losses in IPL 2023. The last time Delhi were close to IPL glory was in 2020 when they suffered a heartbreaking five-wicket loss against Mumbai Indians in the final.

According to the two-week schedule released by the Board of Cricket for Control in India (BCCI), Delhi Capitals will battle against Punjab Kings in both teams’ first IPL 2024 match at the Punjab Cricket Association New Stadium in Mullanpur on March 23.

During the IPL mini-auction in December 2023, Delhi Capitals bought Harry Brook, Tristan Stubbs, Shai Hope, Jhye Richardson, Kumar Kushagra, Sumit Kumar, Ricky Bhui, Rasikh Dar, Swastik Chikara.

In addition, retained players like David Warner, Anrich Nortje, Axar Patel, Mitchell Marsh, Kuldeep Yadav, Prithvi Shaw, Mukesh Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed and, Ishant Sharma will be hoping to produce quality performances in IPL 2024 after underwhelming collective displays last season.

With a good blend of experienced players and promising youngsters, the Capitals have the potential to enjoy a strong campaign in IPL 2024. However, they also face challenges that could test their resolve and here we look at their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and, threats ahead of the new season.

Strengths

A fit-again Rishabh Pant will make his return to bolster Delhi Capitals. He’s scored 2,838 runs in 98 IPL matches and boasts an impressive strike rate of 147.97. A powerful hitter of the ball, if Pant can hit top form in IPL 2024, DC will most certainly fancy their chances of title glory.

Delhi’s two top-order batters David Warner and Prithvi Shaw cannot be taken lightly either. Warner delivered staggering performances in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 to help Australia lift the trophy. The Aussie opener scored a whopping 535 runs in 11 matches and he will be eager to kick on in IPL 2024 after notching up 516 runs in 14 matches in the last Indian Premier League season.

Shaw, just like his opening partner Warner, is also a destructive batter. However, he didn’t enjoy the best of IPL campaigns last time around and will be looking to make amends in the new season after some good performances in English county cricket and on the Indian domestic circuit over the past year.

Apart from a fiery batting line-up, DC also have two quality Indian international spinners in Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. The spin duo have been unstoppable at times and have picked up plenty of wickets across all formats of the game. Their form will be key for Delhi’s success in the upcoming season.

DC’s fast bowlers aren’t exactly pushovers either. Mitchell Marsh along with Anrich Nortje, Jhye Richardson, Mukesh Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed and, Ishant Sharma make for a pace bowling unit with plenty of variety and guile that can trouble opposition batters.

Weakness

With the exception of Marsh and Axar Patel, the lack of quality all-rounders in the Delhi team is a cause for concern. Over-reliance on the likes of Marsh and Axar Patel could prove to be costly if the all-round duo fail to get going in IPL 2024.

Meanwhile, Prithvi Shaw is another player who a lot will depend on. His performances for Delhi in the past few IPL seasons haven’t been the best to put things mildly.

Shaw was even benched in IPL 2023 as he managed just 106 runs all season. His form coupled with DC’s limited all-round options are a few problematic areas, which the team from the national capital must look to overcome.

Opportunities

English star Harry Brook will be raring to have an impact with Delhi Capitals after making his IPL bow with Sunrisers Hyderabad last year. Brook became the first centurion in IPL 2023 when he made a ton for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Kolkata Knight Riders.

Brook is widely recognised as one of the most devastating batters in the T20 format and will be keen to leave a mark with his power-hitting for DC in the middle overs.

IPL 2024 could also be a year for Indian fast bowlers to prove themselves ahead of the ICC Men’s T20I World Cup 2024. The likes of Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Kumar, in particular, will enter the new season with the hope of producing top performances that put their name in the reckoning for a spot in India’s team for the T20 World Cup in June.

Threats

One of the major threats for Delhi Capitals could be their overdependence on the injury-prone Anrich Nortje, who has struggled with fitness of late and has been out of action for the past year.

He even failed to make the cut for South Africa’s squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and since he’s one of DC’s biggest pace weapons, it goes without saying that his absence would prove to be a major setback for Delhi.

Similarly, Pant himself is recovering from a long-term injury after an accident in late 2022. How he fares in terms of form with the bat as well as his overall fitness is something to keep an eye on since it’s not always easy to instantly find one’s old rhythm on the field following a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury.

Probable Playing XII:

Prithvi Shaw, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant (c, wk), Harry Brook, Axar Patel, Lalit Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, Anrich Nortje, Khaleel Ahmed, Yash Dhull (impact sub)
