Cricket World Cup 2023: List Of All Records At The ICC World Cup 2023

Posted on October 24, 2023 By admin

At every edition of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, we see plenty of records getting created and re-written and the ongoing tournament in India is no exception. Beginning in 1975, the ODI World Cup has reached its 13th edition, producing plenty of runs and a lot of surprising results. Defending champions England find themselves at the bottom of the table after four matches, while Afghanistan, playing only their third ODI World Cup, have picked up two wins against former world champions so far. The Netherlands produced a major breakthrough as well, defeating the in-form South African team in Dharamshala. (Cricket World Cup 2023 Points Table)

The tournament has been lit up with plenty of spectacular individual performances and the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has been at the forefront of this record-breaking spree.

Here’s a look at the records broken at the ICC World Cup 2023 so far.

ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 records
1. Most centuries

Rohit Sharma’s blazing century against Afghanistan was his seventh in World Cup cricket, the most for any cricketer. He surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s 12-year-old record of six centuries in the world’s biggest cricket tournament. Rohit, who scored his first World Cup century against Bangladesh in the 2015 quarterfinals, went on to score a record-breaking five centuries in 2019.

With 1,289 runs in 22 matches at an average of 64.45, Rohit Sharma is the fifth leading run-scorer in World Cup cricket.

2. Highest total

South Africa smashed the record for the highest team total in their opening match against Sri Lanka in Delhi. Courtesy of centuries from Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram, the Proteas’ batting line-up minted 428 runs batting first. The previous record belonged to Australia, who had scored 417/6 against Afghanistan at Perth in 2015.

3. Fastest century

Aiden Markram smashed a 49-ball century against Sri Lanka, making it the fastest ton in World Cup history. Markram came in to bat at No. 4 in the 31st over and finished with 106 off 54 balls, which included 14 fours and three sixes. Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien held the record previously, who scored a 50-ball century against England in the 2011 edition.

4. Most centuries in a single innings

In the same match against Sri Lanka – South Africa’s Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen and Aiden Markram became the first batting trio to score centuries in a single innings of an ODI World Cup match. This was only the fourth instance of three batters scoring centuries in an ODI innings and South Africa have achieved the feat thrice.

5. Best run chase

Pakistan chased down a 345-run target against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad, making it the most successful run chase in ODI World Cup history. Sri Lanka had scored 344/9 batting first, courtesy of centuries from Kusal Mendis and Sadeera Samarawickrama. In the run chase, Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan starred with centuries as the 1992 champions chased the total with 10 balls and six wickets to spare.

International records
1. Most sixes in international cricket

During his century against Afghanistan, Rohit Sharma surpassed Chris Gayle as the batter with the most number of sixes in international cricket. The West Indian power hitter finished his international career with 553 sixes. After the match against New Zealand in Dharamshala, Rohit Sharma hit 568 sixes to his credit across all three international formats.

In World Cup cricket, Rohit Sharma has hit 40 sixes and is second only to Chris Gayle, who has hit 48. The Indian skipper is in contention to break this record by the end of this tournament.

2. Most ODI runs in successful run chases

Virat Kohli, often considered by many as the king of run chases, empowered that status with a remarkable achievement. During the match against Australia, the Indian batter surpassed Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most runs scored in successful ODI run chases. Tendulkar had scored 5,490 runs in 124 innings.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has so far accumulated 5786 runs in successful run chases in 96 innings at a remarkable average of 90.40 and a strike rate of 97.16. Kohli has hit 23 hundreds and 25 half-centuries in the process.
