Getting Weird Notifications On Gmail? Google Agrees The App Is Broken

Users across Reddit and X have reported a proliferation of unwanted and spam notifications on the Gmail app. Promotional or spam emails that usually go unnoticed are popping up as notifications and going straight to the inbox. Complaints filed on Google Forums and Reddit suggest these promotional emails are bypassing the spam filters.

Google has acknowledged these errors on the Google Workspace Status dashboard. “We advise the users to be extra diligent in lieu of missing spam checks. Our engineering team is investigating the issue,” Google said on Jan. 24.

On Jan. 25, Google further confirmed that some Gmail users experienced a misclassification of emails in their inbox as well as delays in receiving emails.

“We will publish an analysis of this incident once we have completed our internal investigation. We thank you for your patience while we worked on resolving the issue,” Google said upon fixing the issue.

As for the sorting issues, Google has yet to issue confirmation of resolving the problem, but they have acknowledged the error and are working on a solution. The developers have urged the users to remain patient and be cautious when interacting with any of the spam emails.
