With domestic pressure growing on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman of Bangladesh because of the ongoing protests by the readymade garment (RMG) workers, the window for his expected visit to India is fast closing, said a high-level official source. Speaking to The Hindu the source said that on India-Bangladesh relations, Prime Minister Rahman is being “misguided by his own people”.

“The situation in Bangladesh is fast deteriorating. The protests by the RMG workers are a serious issue as the economy is facing trouble. It is not appearing to be a short-term crisis or a case that can be controlled by the administration,” said the source providing an Indian assessment of the ongoing protests that have rocked Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, for several days. He further said that the protest is exposing the weakness of the government led by Mr. Rahman and said, “In this backdrop, the window for the visit of Prime Minister Rahman to India is fast closing because of his domestic challenges, but we remain open for his visit.”
