The Public Works Department (PWD) has taken up the construction of three more government bungalows for ministerial accommodation in the city.
While the department has completed the process of allotting the government bungalows on Greenways Road in Adyar to the newly inducted Ministers, the work on building new ones at a cost of ₹11.32 crore is in the final stage. The project is expected to be completed in a month, said sources in the department.
The department recently completed the construction of 10 bungalows for Madras High Court judges and allotted Pamani Illam, a government bungalow on Greenways Road, for use as the Chief Minister’s Camp Office. It has been renovated and provided facilities such as waiting rooms and rooms for consultations with officials. It had previously served as the official residence of former chief secretary.
Sources said 35 government bungalows have been allotted to State Ministers after renovation in a phased manner, with many already occupying the allotted residences.
The government bungalow, Ezhil Illam, has been renamed as Arignar Anna Illam. Two other official residences have also been occupied.
The government bungalows being built for ministerial accommodation would be similar to the recently completed residences for judges.
The single-storey judges’ official residences are spread over nearly 5,780 sq.ft. each on the Podhigai campus near Tholkappia Poonga. Each of them has four bedrooms, official rooms, security room, and waiting area for visitors. Landscaping too has been done. The work has been completed at a cost of ₹36.5 crore, and three of the residences have been occupied.
There was no proposal to rename the bungalow allotted for the CM’s Camp Office, sources said.
