Former IPS officer and former Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) N. Balasubramanyam died late on Thursday (October 29, 2026) night while undergoing treatment in the United States.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu condoled Mr. Balasubramanyam’s death. In a post on X, he said: “Deeply saddened by the passing of retired DGP (Rank officer) N. Balasubramanyam garu. An officer of uncompromising integrity, he earned respect for his firm decisions, progressive ideas and unwavering commitment to public service. Throughout his distinguished career in policing, intelligence, transport and public administration, he championed reform, innovation and the use of technology to serve people better. He encouraged out-of-the-box thinking and involved his team in decision-making, fostering a spirit of shared responsibility. Andhra Pradesh continued to benefit from his experience and dedication until just a few months ago.

He fought his illness with extraordinary courage and determination. His passing is a profound loss, but his contributions and the inspiration he gave the police force will endure. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. Om Shanti.

Expressing grief over his death, APSRTC Chairman Konakalla Narayana Rao said Mr. Balasubramanyam’s death was a great loss to the organisation and to the officers and employees who had worked with him. He recalled his contributions to the corporation during his tenure as its Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, particularly in strengthening administration, improving passenger services and promoting employee welfare.

Describing him as a dedicated and disciplined officer with strong administrative skills, Mr. Konakalla said his services to the public transport sector would remain memorable. He also recalled Mr. Balasubramanyam’s commitment to public service and his humane approach towards employees. He conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace.

Education and IT Minister Nara Lokesh also expressed shock over Mr. Balasubramanyam’s death and paid tributes to his memory. Describing him as a straightforward person who discharged his duties with dedication and integrity, Mr. Lokesh said his services would remain memorable. He conveyed his deepest condolences to the family members and prayed for strength to them in this hour of grief.

He was a 1994-batch IPS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre and known as a ‘no-nonsense’ officer.

Mr. Balasubramanyam, fondly referred to as Balu by his contemporaries, served as Superintendent of Police for Nalgonda and Mahbubnagar districts, now in Telangana.

He also worked as Inspector-General (Intelligence), Transport Commissioner and Director-General of Police (Organisation) in Andhra Pradesh. He also served as chief executive officer of e-Pragati and the Real Time Governance Society (RTGS). He was appointed Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of the APSRTC in early 2026.
