The heavy rains which lashed on Saturday (October 17, 2026) night resulted in stagnation of water in a few localities of west Velachery despite the presence of storm water drain network.

The residents of AGS Colony, Saraswathi nagar, Bhuvaneshwari Nagar, Aandal nagar and Mohanapuri, suffered flooding like situation because of the slow discharge of rainwater in the Veerangal Odai, which is ultimately linked to the Pallikaranai Marshland.

Geetha Ganesh, a resident of AGS Colony, said that water stagnated for one-feet in some localities including the 4th Main road but within a few hours of rain stopping in the early morning on Sunday rainwater had receded as the Chennai Corporation had installed a heavy duty pump in the Veerangal Odai to pump out the rainwater.

In Sakthi Nagar main road which links Velachery to Adambakkam, the construction of storm water drain and footpath resulted in stagnation of rain water. However in the morning the rainwater receded. Most of the houses which are on low level compared to the road height were flooded with rainwater.

In Andal Nagar and Bhuvaneshwari Nagar, several individual houses are low lying because of the increasing height of the road and SWD being on a high level causing rainwater to back flow into the houses.

The Southern Railway has installed a earth mover for desilting the six-vent culvert located near the Velachery railway station of the Mass Rapid Transit system (MRTS) which has helped in prevention of flooding in the localities of east Velachery.
