The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) will survey 4.55 km of roads in Chengalpattu to prepare a plan to improve road space and ease traffic congestion, including detailed measurements of road features, adjoining buildings, and drainage infrastructure.

The survey will cover three stretches: 1.9 km of the State Highway Urban Stretch Six (SHU 6) passing through Sadras, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Arakkonam and Tiruttani Road, 2.3 km of Chengalpattu Main Road, and 350 metres of PV Kalathur Road, according to the authority.

The findings will be used to prepare a Road Space Allocation Plan, which will guide the design of road improvements. The survey will map carriageways, medians, footpaths, cycle tracks, junctions, bus stops, bridges and culverts, along with the boundaries and entrances of buildings along the roads, CUMTA stated in a document.

The survey will also record stormwater drains, manholes, drainage outlets, flood-prone locations, streetlights, utility poles, signboards and other roadside features. Buildings and their access points will be measured to support the planning of road space and movement.

Survey teams will also measure road levels and cross-sections, generally at intervals of 20 metres, additional measurements will be taken at curves and locations where the ground level changes sharply. The survey will also cover at least 50 metres along roads joining the surveyed stretches, the document mentioned.

The topographic data and drawings will provide the groundwork for detailed engineering designs for the proposed traffic management measures, according to the department.
