Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday virtually laid the foundation stones for new waste processing plants at Okhla, Singhola and Ghazipur, as well as a 300-tonne-per-day biogas plant at Ghazipur for processing biodegradable waste, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said in a release.
According to a separate release issued by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the waste processing plants will have capacities of 1,400 tonnes per day (TPD) in Okhla, 700 TPD in Singhola and 800 TPD in Ghazipur.
‘100 acres freed’
Earlier in the day, Ms. Gupta visited the Okhla landfill site and said that over the past 18 months, 217.17 lakh metric tons of waste had been disposed of at the Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur landfill sites, freeing nearly 100 acres of land.
As per the CMO release, Ms. Gupta told officials that merely removing the waste lying on the surface would not be enough. She said along with scientifically disposing of the old waste accumulated underneath, the system for processing the fresh waste must also be strengthened immediately.
