A fire broke out at a defunct four-storey building near Teynampet signal on Saturday afternoon, and destroyed garbage piled up on the premises. The fire also damaged the exterior of an adjacent building complex.

The building, which is reportedly involved in a legal dispute, is located between Guna Complex and another private building. A large quantity of garbage had accumulated in the space between the two buildings.

Fire and Rescue Services personnel went to the spot and brought the blaze under control.

The police are investigating the cause of the fire. Preliminary investigation revealed that it could have been caused by a lit cigarette being thrown into the garbage, though the possibility of an electrical trigger is also being examined. Further investigation is under way.
