India’s extreme operating conditions — from high humidity and intense heat to dust, vibration and power fluctuations — are emerging as a real-world testing ground for technologies meant for some of the world’s most demanding industries, according to Andreas Pecher, President and CEO of ZEISS Group.
“Systems, devices and technologies capable of withstanding rigorous conditions in India will be robust enough to be exported globally for high-stakes sectors such as aerospace, maritime defence and heavy manufacturing,” Pecher told The Hindu in an exclusive interview.
The German technology major, which designs and manufactures high-precision medical devices, optoelectronic systems and advanced optical solutions, is looking at India not only as a growth market but also as a source of globally scalable innovation.
A key focus area under the initiative is harsh-environment optics— optical systems designed to deliver precision performance despite exposure to heat, dust, vibration and corrosive environments. Such technologies are increasingly critical in industrial quality assurance, manufacturing inspection and field applications.
India’s challenging environment provides a unique opportunity to develop solutions that are locally relevant but globally applicable, Mr. Pecher said. Technologies emerging from areas such as frugal engineering, robotics and advanced optics could eventually be integrated into ZEISS’s global operations across more than 50 countries.
The company believes India’s cost-conscious innovation ecosystem can help redesign product architectures without compromising precision or reliability.
Stressing that frugal innovation does not mean lower performance; he said it means rethinking designs and cost structures to create resource-efficient solutions using advanced technology.
The approach could allow ZEISS to reach new customer segments in emerging markets while improving competitiveness in developed economies.
ZEISS, which reported revenue of around €12 billion in September 2025, operates across semiconductor technology, industrial quality and research, manufacturing technology and consumer markets. The company invests nearly 15% of its annual revenue in research and development.
Mr. Pecher highlighted India’s engineering talent as a key advantage, noting that the country’s workforce has demonstrated the ability to solve complex problems under resource and cost constraints while maintaining high performance standards.
Chennai hub to connect deep-tech research with global markets
ZEISS’s recently launched innovation hub at the IIT Madras Research Park is expected to become a critical link between laboratory research and commercial applications.
Mr. Pecher said the Chennai facility would go beyond being an R&D centre and become part of ZEISS’s global innovation network, with intellectual property and technologies developed in India feeding into the company’s international product pipeline.
Research emerging from the collaboration will be evaluated for technical feasibility and commercial deployment, leveraging IIT Madras Research Park’s ecosystem of startups, laboratories and Centres of Excellence.
The Chennai initiative will follow a co-innovation model, bringing together ZEISS experts, IIT Madras faculty, researchers and startups to work on areas including robotics, fluid dynamics and optics.
Unlike a conventional venture capital or acquisition-led strategy, the partnership aims to jointly develop technologies by combining academic research, industry expertise and market access.
He said Chennai’s combination of industrial capability, engineering talent and challenging environmental conditions makes it particularly relevant for developing harsh-environment technologies.
“Successful technologies developed through this collaboration could move beyond the Indian market and enter ZEISS’s global product development pipeline,” he said.
