India faces Panama at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Friday in an international football friendly that marks the beginning of a rare sequence of high-profile fixtures.

Over the next fortnight, the national team will take on three teams that featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup – Panama, Brazil and Uruguay. These outings offers the Indian team an understanding of where it stands against the international elite.

India coach Khalid Jamil will look to expose his players to the pace, intensity and tactical demands of top-level football.

But Jamil will also have to contend with rustiness, with the Indian Super League yet to begin and several players short of competitive match practice.

Experienced goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu remains an important figure. Anirudh Thapa’s ability to dictate play from midfield and Ryan Williams’ direct running could be crucial.

Jamil could be tempted to adopt a cautious approach and defend in numbers. When opportunities arise on the counter, however, Williams and Manvir Singh will have to make them count.

Panama, ranked 44th in the world, poses a mighty challenge. Its campaign in the World Cup ended in the group stage following defeats to Ghana, Croatia and England, but for the tiny Central American nation to reach the grandest stage is in itself a commendable achievement.

With 14 members of the Panama squad having featured in the World Cup campaign, there is plenty of quality in the visitor camp.

The first examination of the gulf between Indian football and the international elite begins on Friday. Five-time World Cup winner Brazil (on October 3) and Uruguay (October 6) will raise the bar considerably higher.
