Two groups of youngsters clash during Vinayaka idol procession in Erode

Posted on September 18, 2026 By admin

A clash broke out between two groups of youngsters during a Vinayaka idol immersion procession at Karungalpalayam on Cauvery Road in Erode on Thursday (September 18, 2026) night.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. when members of one group allegedly attacked those belonging to another group during the procession. Videos purportedly showing the youngsters assaulting each other later went viral on social media.

The incident caused panic among residents in the area, following which the police intervened. However, the youngsters involved in the clash had fled by then.

Police sources said efforts were on to identify those seen in the video. The motive behind the clash would be ascertained after the persons involved were identified and brought in for inquiry, the sources said. The police were also checking hospitals to ascertain whether anyone injured in the incident had been admitted for treatment.

More than 200 Vinayaka idols installed at various locations across the city were taken out in procession through arterial roads and immersed in the Cauvery river.
