The story so far: In July 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice announced a massive takedown of another criminal enterprise that tried to defraud Medicare, the U.S. government healthcare benefits program. The takedown named “324 defendants, including 96 doctors, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other licensed medical professionals, in 50 federal districts and 12 State Attorneys General’s Offices across the United States, for their alleged participation in various health care fraud schemes involving over $14.6 billion in intended loss.”
The U.S. Justice Department charged four individuals in the Northern District of Texas with health care fraud schemes totalling over $210 million as part of national takedown. Mohammed Khadeer Khan (46) is among the four individuals named by the Justice Department.
What’s the situation now?
On September 11, 2026, the Office of Inspector General, Healthcare and Human Services, posted the name and identifying details of Khadeer Khan Mohammed (46) as a fugitive who allegedly ran a sprawling $93M genetic-testing scam targeting Medicare. The organisation believes he is in India. Khadeer Khan is an Indian citizen, according to the U.S. court filings.
Who is Khadeer Khan?
Khadeer Khan Mohammed hails from Hyderabad, India, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. However, the notice declaring him as fugitive has this caveat: “The public is reminded that charges are merely allegations, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.”
What are the accusations?
Between August 2023 and October 2024, Mr. Khadeer Khan is accused of submitting $93 million in false and fraudulent claims for genetic testing that were never ordered or performed by Medicare. Medicare paid up to $65 million after Khadeer Khan made these claims.
American Premier Labs LLC was incorporated in mid-2020 and was into genetic testing. To execute his alleged scam, Mr. Khadeer Khan acquired a controlling stake in American Premier, the lab at the heart of the scam. Then he allegedly used personal information of physicians without their knowledge to submit those claims to Medicare and profit.
What’s the status of the 2025 probe?
The U.S. Justice Department cases are in various stages of the process and litigation and in different judicial precincts. Some of the defendants have reached honourable settlements after paying up. Rachit Pharmacy reached a settlement agreement after Rajendra Patel of Rachit Drug Inc. paid up $225,000 as Settlement Amount, of which $112,500 was restitution.
What’s next for Khadeer Khan Mohammed?
Both India and the U.S. have an extradition treaty that came into effect in September 1999. For those already convicted of an offence, extradition request has to be supported by a copy of the judgement of conviction or a statement by a judicial authority that the person has been convicted. If Mr. Khadeer Khan is in India as alleged by the lookout notice, he may face extradition to the U.S.
