In Bihar, over 47 lakh people affected by floods across 87 blocks of 15 districts

Water levels in several major rivers in Bihar are receding or stabilising in the State, with the Disaster Management Department (DMD) continuously monitoring the situation and carrying out relief and rescue operations in 15 flood-affected districts.

According Disaster Management Department release, water discharge in the Gandak and Kosi rivers remained stable, while the Sone recorded a declining trend.

As per the latest figures made available by 6 p.m. on Friday (September 11, 2026), the Gandak’s discharge at the Valmikinagar Barrage was recorded at 86,000 cusecs, with its increasing trend. The highest water discharge was recorded at 2,24,000 cusecs on July 14, 2026. 

The Kosi’s discharge at the Birpur Barrage was recorded at 1,41,295 cusecs, with its increasing trend. The highest water discharge of this year so far was recorded at 2,55,425 cusecs on July 20, 2026. 

Similarly, the Sone river’s discharge at the Indrapuri Barrage was recorded at 67,737 cusecs, with its declining trend. The highest water discharge of this year so far was recorded at 5,63,654 cusecs on September 2, 2026. 

As per Water Resources Department’s Ganga Sone Flood Protection Division’s report issued at 6 a.m. on Friday (September 11, 2026), the water level of river Ganga witnessed a declining trend at Digha Ghat, Gandhi Ghat, Maner, Hathidah (all in Patna) and Munger while its water level remained steady at Buxar. Except at Buxar, the Ganga is flowing above danger level at several places in Bihar that included Maner, Digha Ghat, Gandhi Ghat, Hathidah (in Patna) and Munger. 

Other rivers including the Gandak river at Dumariaghat, Kosi at Baltara and Kursela, Burhi Gandak at Khagaria, Punpun at Sripalpur, Baghmati at Benibad and Ghaghara at Darauli and Gangpur Siswan are flowing above the danger mark.

The Department said that approximately 47.33 lakh people have been affected by floods in 87 blocks of 15 districts — Patna, Bhojpur, Saran, Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Buxar, Samastipur, Munger, Katihar, Lakhisarai, Khagaria, Purnea, Arwal and Madhepura.

A total of 1221 community kitchens are currently being operated in various districts for flood-affected people, and more than 59.73 lakh people (number of plates) have so far been served meals. In addition, accommodation, food and medical facilities have been arranged for 12,260 flood victims at 15 relief camps. 

According to the Department, 3.13 lakh polythene sheets and 48,400 dry-ration packets have been distributed among flood-affected people. Around 10,823 quintals of cattle feed have also been distributed. 

In addition, a total of 1,876 boats are being operated to facilitate the evacuation of residents and ensure easier transportation. Besides 27 SDRF teams and 10 NDRF teams have been deployed across various districts to ensure quick and speedy relief and rescue operations.
