Seven people were injured after part of an under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar’s Vaishali district on Thursday (September 10, 2026). The bridge is part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana – a Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways scheme to build and improve India’s road networks.

The incident took place near Itwaripur village under Lalganj police station during the four-lane construction work. After receiving the information, Vaishali Superintendent of Police, Shubhank Mishra and Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Gopal Mandal inspected the site.

“First aid was provided to all the injured, of whom 3 injured individuals have been referred to Sadar Hospital, Hajipur, for better treatment. The senior official who reached on the site has instructed the relevant officials to investigate the incident and the construction company’s compliance with the prescribed safety standards. Further action is being taken in connection with the incident, “Vaishali Police stated in its press release.

Out of seven, one worker remained trapped under the machine for about an hour and a half, due to which his leg got fractured. After much effort, the worker was safely rescued after using a gas cutter.

National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) also posted a message on its social media account X sharing the information about the incident.

“NHAI would like to inform that an incident occurred during the movement of a launching girder at an under-construction four-lane bridge on the Bakarpur–Manikpur section of NH-139W in Hajipur, Bihar, due to a technical issue in the launching girder system,” NHAI stated.

It further said, “A detailed technical assessment is currently underway to ascertain the circumstances that led to the malfunction. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the assessment. NHAI accords the highest priority to the safety and well-being of workers and all stakeholders associated with the project, as well as all National Highway projects across the country.”

Leader of Opposition Tejashiw Yadav criticised the state government over the collapse of the beam launcher, alleging that substandard construction materials, poor quality, disregard for standards, irregularities in inspections, and the corrupt role of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders are the main reasons behind the continuous bridge collapses in Bihar.

“Another bridge collapses in Bihar! In Vaishali district, reports indicate that nearly half a dozen labourers were trapped and injured after yet another under-construction bridge collapsed under the weight of corruption. As expected, the corrupt NDA government will once again cover up its corruption.,” Mr. Yadav alleged.
