Doctors of SIMS Hospital performed a bone-sparing hip procedure on two international patients.

The two patients — one aged 44 from the U.S. and another aged 58 from the U.K. — underwent the procedures. Both looked up for hip resurfacing options as they wanted to be active and athletic.

According to a press release, while the conventional hip procedures often require extensive removal of bone, this approach preserves a substantial portion of the patient’s healthy natural bone while achieving a stable and functional reconstruction.

Vijay C. Bose, joint director and senior consultant, Orthopaedics, said the hip joint is a ball and socket joint. The joint can become arthritic or damaged. He said that hip resurfacing is a bone-preserving procedure. Patients had access to hip resurfacing through metal-on-metal implants but these had certain issues and were largely discontinued worldwide.

“As a result, patients could not access hip resurfacing procedures. We now have an implant made of high density polyethylene that has been launched in Tamil Nadu. This helps in conserving the bone, shape and anatomy, and facilitates high activity including competitive sports,” he explained.

The goal was not simply to replace a painful joint but to preserve as much of the patient’s own bone as possible while respecting the natural mechanics of the hip, he said, according to the release.

Ravi Pachamuthu, chairman of SRM Group, said that India and Tamil Nadu were growing as a medical hub. Raju Sivasamy, vice president, SIMS Hospital and Sharat Kusuma, Chief Executive Officer of Joint Medica USA along with the two patients were present.
