Reclassify Madurai Kamaraj University College as a government college

Posted on September 3, 2026 By admin

Highlighting the financial crisis affecting the smooth functioning of Madurai Kamaraj University College, the college authorities on Thursday urged the State government to take over the college and reclassify it into a government college.

Addressing journalists on the college premises here, Associate Professor P. Murugesan, Head of Department of Business Administration Studies and a member of Academic Council of the Madurai Kamaraj University said the college was established in 1994, as a constituent college of the University.

Initially the college had a total of 30 staff with around 1,000 students and eight courses were offered. Now, the college has expanded and it offers 16 undergraduate courses and nine post graduate courses.

The teaching staff at the college comprised 19 regular, 80 consolidated pay and 30 guest lecturers and the non-teaching staff comprised six permanent, 15 consolidated pay and 15 casual labour, he said.

Earlier, the number of students had crossed over 4,000. However, it had now come down to around 3,800. The college was facing a severe financial crisis. The staff salaries depended on the tuition fees paid by the students. Since it was not a government college, the students were paying around ₹30,000 for the courses.

Most of the students were from humble backgrounds and even took up part time jobs to earn and pay the fees. There were also cases of students leaving the courses as they could not afford to pay the fees, he said.

Students from rural areas would join the college earlier. However, now students from those areas were opting to join government colleges. The number of government colleges have also increased. Therefore, in the interest of the students and the college, the State government should take over the Madurai Kamaraj University college. It should be converted and reclassified as a government college, he said.
