HCLTech, Transport for NSW partner to explore AI-driven traffic insights in India

HCLTech, Transport for NSW partner to explore AI-driven traffic insights in India

Posted on September 3, 2026 By admin

HCLTech has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) to explore the advancement of artificial intelligence-powered analytics capabilities for the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS).

As part of the collaboration, HCLTech will explore the integration of Sarvam’s multilingual foundation models with SCATS. The initiative is aimed at enabling traffic operators, planners and engineers to query and analyse SCATS data in local Indian languages.

The partnership would also examine solutions to address data sovereignty requirements for smart-city infrastructure. This includes exploring the deployment of SCATS AI infrastructure on premises through private cloud environments, allowing cities greater control over their data and AI systems.

“The world’s major cities are expanding at an unprecedented pace, creating new opportunities to reimagine how technology can manage increasingly complex transport networks,” said Swapan Johri, President, Growth Markets, HCLTech.

NSW Premier Chris Minns said “this collaboration with HCLTech will explore how AI could make sophisticated traffic information more accessible to the people managing growing cities in India.” He added that the partnership was another example of the strong technology and economic ties between New South Wales and India.

SCATS currently allows users to interact with traffic, congestion and geospatial data through natural-language queries and compare insights across selected time periods.

Developed by the NSW Government in 1975, SCATS has since expanded globally and is now deployed in more than 200 cities across over 30 countries.
