UDF nominees oppose Sanskrit varsity Syndicate decision to cancel incomplete exam tabulation registers

The nominees of the United Democratic Front (UDF) in the re-constituted Syndicate of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS) in Keralam have asked for an amendment in the decision taken at the special Syndicate meet held on August 22, 2026 over the issue of permitting officials record their signatures on tabulation registers of exams held long ago.

In a communication sent to Vice-Chancellor Ciza Thomas, they have pointed out that a blanket cancellation of a decision taken at the Syndicate meet held on July 17, 2026, allowing the officials, who were found to have not signed on the tabulation registers prepared before the issuance of final marks lists, is not practical.

The communication was mailed after the varsity authorities issued an order, confirming the unanimous decision taken at the August 22 special Syndicate meeting to cancel the July 17 decision. A decision was also taken to conduct a probe by a sub-committee of the Syndicate into the alleged discrepancies found in the preparation of the tabulation registers. The UDF-affiliated members were among those who had attended the special Syndicate meet on August 22.

Probe sought

K. B. Sabu, member of the Syndicate, said that a blanket cancellation seems “not practical” as it would further delay the issue of degree certificates to the students. He said a probe must be held into allegations of irregularities in the documentation of the tabulation registers for exams held years ago. However, there are genuine cases in which the process of recording the signatures of officials, who had not signed it earlier, has to be permitted, he said.

Senior varsity officials pointed out that the Syndicate meet held on August 22 had held detailed discussions on the lapses detected in tabulation registers and the decision to cancel the July 17 decision was taken unanimously. An inquiry was also decided into the alleged irregularities, they said.

A preliminary assessment by the authorities found that the officials had not recorded their signatures in exams held since 2018. Those who had put their signatures on the tabulation register following the Syndicate decision on July 17 included those who had retired from service.

The matter was included as item no. 31 in the minutes of the Syndicate meeting. It stated that the Syndicate resolved to entrust section officers of three sections in the examination wing to inform officials in the category of Assistant to Deputy Registrars, who have not signed in the tabulation registers, to record it.

The initial assessment found that the erring officials were asked to record their signatures on the tabulation registers even before an official order was issued, confirming the Syndicate decision taken on July 17.
