Consultations ongoing for introducing tenders for offshore wind in Tamil Nadu: Official

Posted on September 2, 2026 By admin

Consultations are ongoing for introducing a new tender for wind offshore technology in Tamil Nadu, Rajesh Kulhari, Joint Secretary at the Union Renewable Ministry told reporters addressing them ahead of the Windergy India, 2026.

Mr. Kulhari stated all feasibility studies conducted in the state have yielded positive results as consultations are ongoing to put forth a new tender for offshore uptake in Tamil Nadu.

“All [feasibility] studies have been completed in Tamil Nadu. The good news is that the capacity utilisation factor is more than fifty percent,” he stated, adding, “Collection of all the required data for offshore wind off the coast of Tamil Nadu, that is, wind velocity, geo-technical and geo-physical – have been completed by the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE).”

Thus, he affirmed, “In the near future, we are trying to [bring] bid for that part of the country.”

As part of its objective for leasing of sites for offshore wind energy, the government had initially identified eight potential zones each off the coast of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat in their preliminary studies.

It had to face a setback in Tamil Nadu as the tenders did not receive the anticipated response.
