Key stakeholders to meet on Sept. 3 to chart India’s roadmap till ODI World Cup

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will convene a critical stock-taking meeting of key stakeholders of India’s men’s cricket teams at its headquarters here on Thursday (September 3, 2026).

It is understood that the meeting will seek to take a deep dive into the issues that have affected India’s performances of late and chart a roadmap through to next year’s ODI World Cup, including a possible extension of chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s tenure.

Multiple sources in the BCCI have confirmed that head coach Gautam Gambhir, Agarkar, Centre of Excellence head of cricket V.V.S. Laxman, captains Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia will attend the meeting in person. Two key BCCI executives are also expected to be present, while some other office-bearers may join via videoconference.

Agarkar’s extension is likely to be a key point of discussion while the roadmap is drawn up. Having taken charge in July 2023, Agarkar’s current contract expires at the end of this month. With BCCI regulations capping a selector’s tenure at four years, he is eligible to continue until next September.

That would ensure continuity through the ODI World Cup, scheduled to begin in October 2027. However, India’s poor returns in ODIs and the cold war between Agarkar and the BCCI hierarchy over Rohit Sharma’s future in international cricket are likely to feature in the deliberations.

Injury management

The injury-management mechanism at the CoE is another area that has come under criticism from the selection committee and team management. As a result, despite the recent PR overdrive around the CoE, BCCI office-bearers are keen to proactively come up with a plan for a more effective injury-management system.

Scheduling overlaps between key India-A and international assignments and major domestic fixtures are also expected to be discussed. India-A’s shadow tour of New Zealand co-inciding with the ODI series against the Kiwis has left little room for adequate Test preparation ahead of the crucial series in November.

The poor run of the limited-overs teams in Ireland and England will also come under detailed scrutiny. Saikia had announced a review meeting immediately after the England tour concluded in mid-July, but it could not be convened because of the unavailability of key personnel.
