Coconut sapling planted to mark World Coconut Day

Posted on September 2, 2026 By admin

District Collector S. Kandasamy planted a coconut sapling on the Collectorate campus here on Wednesday to mark World Coconut Day.

World Coconut Day is observed on September 2 every year to spread awareness on the importance of coconut cultivation, promote coconut-based industries and improve the livelihoods of farmers.

Coconut, often referred to as the ‘Kalpavriksha’ (wish-fulfilling tree), has a wide range of uses. Coconut water, milk and oil, besides coir and shell, are used in the food processing, healthcare, cosmetics, handicrafts and export sectors.

The District Collector said thousands of farmers in the district are engaged in coconut cultivation. The government is implementing various schemes to increase farmers’ income and promote the production of value-added coconut products, according to a release. As part of the observance, Mr. Kandasamy also distributed coconut saplings to farmers.

Agriculture Joint Director R. Sivakumar, Horticulture Deputy Director Guru Saraswathi, farmers and officials were present.
