Engineering, as a career prospect, losing its sheen in Tamil Nadu, say experts

Posted on August 31, 2026 By admin

Is engineering as a career prospect losing its appeal among students in Tamil Nadu?

It could well be the case when compared to last year, if the trends of student intake this year are to be interpreted. Long-time career guidance counsellors believe that there are indications of a slowdown, going by the latest statistics pertaining to students’ intake at the end of the three rounds of Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026.

“Preference for engineering as a career has begun to slide compared to last year, with a marked drop in demand for colleges in the rural areas,” says Jayaprakash Gandhi, a senior career guidance counsellor. To shore up his argument, he presents the following facts: This year, only 112 colleges could fill more than 90% of their seats as against 164 last year. Also, over a hundred of those colleges are situated in urban areas driving home the point that rural institutions have, indeed, taken a hit.

Agrees R. Ashwin, an engineer by training and a career guidance counsellor by profession. “This year, 30 colleges have managed to fill all their seats. Last year, the number was 39,” he points out. This year, the total student intake after three rounds of counselling was clearly lower than last year by four percentage points, he adds. “Intake in over a dozen colleges did not hit double digits,” he notes.

While one college opted out of the counselling process after the first round having failed to attract students, two other colleges failed to admit even a single student from the general category, he said. However, in both those colleges, the seats allocated to the 7.5% horizontal reservation category have been fully filled.

A point of concern raised by Mr. Gandhi was that around 150 institutions could fill less than 50% of their seats through counselling. This would mean that they would face significant operational and financial challenges making it difficult to sustain quality and maintain infrastructure.

Moreover, the prevailing economic situation has not been conducive as well, indicated by the fact that preference for government institutions has increased significantly “as families gravitate towards lower-cost, higher-trust options”, Mr. Gandhi maintains.

In terms of choice for streams of study, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) continued to be the most preferred courses this year, although there has been a gentle increase in preference for other core engineering streams like Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) and Mechanical Engineering (ME), both the counsellors said.

An interesting fact this year was that more number of students with higher cut off marks preferred ECE compared to last year, Mr. Ashwin added.
