Accusing a group of intermediate caste members of threatening them, Scheduled Caste villagers submitted a petition to District Collector Anand Mohan on Monday seeking protection for them by taking due legal action against them.

The petitioners from Ashokapuram in Mela Karunkulam near here alleged a group of 10 persons, all belonging to an intermediate caste, who entered their village on August 22 at 1.25 a.m., pelted stones at their houses and verbally abused them by referring their caste name.

“This is the second attack on our houses as a similar assault was unleashed on April 20 last by the intermediate caste members. Those who resisted the attack were chased by the mob carrying lethal weapons. When we filed a complaint with the Melapalayam police, the first information report was registered. At the same time, the police also registered a case against SC youth of Ashokapuram after based on the complaint from the opponents. This time, no case has been registered till today even after the emboldened attackers carried out the second assault, which creates a suspicion on the police itself,” the petitioners said.

On behalf of Naam Thamizhar Katchi, its office-bearer P. Sathya submitted a petition seeking better basic facilities in Kattarankulam in Manur union. Ms. Sathya said the newly built overhead tank in the village was not in use for the past 2 years as the village panchayat reportedly had no funds for fitting new motor. Consequently, villagers were getting drinking water supply only for 30 minutes twice a week as the water is being supplied from the profusely leaking old overhead tank.

Besides allotting funds for buying the motor for the new overhead tank in disuse, the Collector should take due legal action against the contractor who built the faulty and leaking overhead tank, Ms. Sathya said.

She also said the open well near the Kattarankulam aganwadi should be properly fenced and closed with metal mesh and repair the dilapidated ration shop building.
