Residents of a Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board colony at Pilliayarpuram near Sugunapuram urged the Coimbatore District Collector to curb what they described as anti-social activities and establish a permanent police outpost, citing safety concerns, particularly for women.
In a petition submitted to the District Collector on Monday, CPI Madukkarai union secretary G.P. Sakthivel said the colony has over 300 families and alleged that vacant houses were being used for illicit activities and that clashes involving weapons were frequent.
They said non-functional streetlights compounded security concerns.
They also alleged that no effective action was taken despite repeated petitions to the Kurichi SIDCO police outpost. The residents further alleged that some police personnel were siding with the anti-social elements and threatening complainants with false cases.
They also alleged inadequate water supply, garbage clearance, sewage and septic tank maintenance, public transport and healthcare facilities.
The residents said they had submitted several petitions since December 2023, including one to the Superintendent of Police seeking a police outpost in March 2024.
