Stray dog menace

Stray dogs have been found roaming on Platform no. 1 at Tirunelveli junction railway station when Tirunelveli superfast express was scheduled to depart. Passengers having dinner seated on the platform floor find dogs waiting nearby for leftover food. The presence of stray dogs poses a serious threat to passengers. Vendors at the railway station say the nuisance is not confined to nights, but it is also present during daytime. The dogs have made the platform their regular shelter as they get food from commuters. Unfortunately, there is no check to the menace. While the railway administration and the station manager take measures to make the rail journey comfortable for passengers, there is no one responsible at the station to free the passengers from the fear of stray dogs at the railway station.

Traffic snarl

The rail overbridge (ROB) at Ozhuginasery, which was constructed at a snail’s pace, has been opened to the public without any formal announcement. While vehicles are now being allowed to use the bridge in a partial manner, a bottleneck appears to have emerged in the movement of traffic. While vehicles earlier moved freely on the old bridge, the new bridge, which ends sharply towards Avvai Shanmugam Salai, seems to be a cause for concern. The old alignment provided a smooth curve towards Vadasery road. Hence, there is stagnation of vehicles during peak hours on all roads, which makes driving difficult and causes tension among road users. Therefore, a suitable solution should be found to overcome the congestion.

Water woes

Due to depletion of ground water, borewells have gone dry at Meenakshipuram under Eruvadi special grade town panchayat. Drilling a new borewell can provide relief to residents. The town panchayat authorities are urged to give special attention to the issue.

Commendable initiative

This is with reference to the article, Kaani tribal products to get global market, published in The Hindu, dated August 24. The Kanniyakumari district administration’s development of a special brand and sales outlets for marketing Kanni tribal handicrafts is a commendable step towards recognising local artisans. The initiatives could provide a stable source of income for the Kaani community and enable global acknowledgement for their craftsmanship.
